Lol Cristiano Ronaldo's reaction to Messi winning the Ballon d'Or says it all

Cristiano Ronaldo was denied a third straight Ballon d'Or yesterday evening - and this is how he reacted to the news that Lionel Messi had been voted as the best footballer on the planet in 2015. Barcelona superstar Messi won the title for the fifth time, beating Ronaldo and teammate Neymar in the voting. Messi took top spot with 41.33 percent, ahead of Ronaldo with 27.76 percent. Neymar finished in third with just 7.86 percent.

"It is a very special moment for me to be back here on this stage, winning again another Ballon d’Or after being there in the audience watching Cristiano win," he said.

"It’s incredible this is my fifth. It’s much more than anything I’ve dreamed of as a kid.

"I want to thank everyone who voted for me and I want to hank my team-mates. And lastly, I want to thank football in general for everything it has brought me. Both the bad and the good. Because it has made me learn and grow."

First Lady receives best wishes for New Year 2016

The First Lady Madam Chantal Biya has received 2016 New Year wishes from wives of the Diplomatic and National dignitaries at the State House this Friday 8th January 2016.

The colourful ceremony started at mid day when the wives of Diplomats posted to Yaounde and female members of the Diplomatic corps, led by Mrs. Kaya, wife of Russian Ambassador to Cameroon and Vice Dean of the Female Diplomatic corps in Cameroon.

Various groups of women from different walks of life then took turns to greet the First Lady, including the wives of Senators, Parliamentarians, female mayors, members of GFAC and CERAC, the spouses of the senior staff of the Presidency of the Republic amongst others, The ceremony was punctuated with music,dancing and merry making, while all the invitees took home a parcel each from Madame Chantal Biya

Douala: Three Corpses Discovered In A Day

Three corpses were discovered on January 5, 2016, in different neighbourhoods of Douala. The first was that of an unidentified man aged about 40 years.

The corpse was discovered at 7 am not far from Government Bilingual High School, Nyalla. It had wounds suspected to have been inflicted by a machete. It is thought that the man was attacked, robbed and beaten up with a sharp object before he died. His remains were left at the Laquintinie Hospital Mortuary.

The second corpse, that of Chemeza Corentine, was discovered in her brother's home in the Mbangue neighbourhood at 11 am. The 38-year-old topographer is suspected to have committed suicide by setting herself ablaze as a bottle of fuel was found beside her roasted body. After investigations, the body was handed over to the family for burial.

The last corpse was discovered at 12 noon at Bonaloka. The body of 40-year-old Papaya, which was discovered with traces of violence, was taken to the Laquintinie Hospital Mortuary. The Judicial Police have opened investigations.

Bamenda Welcomes Industrial Zone

The zone to host giant industries is located at Mile 6 Nkwen.

The population of Bamenda is highly appreciative of the coming of an industrial zone in the region and has promised to collaborate when ever need arises. This was during a working visit paid by MAGZI officials to the region recently. The officials of the Institution for the Management of Industrial Zones- MAGZI  also came to  evaluate the work done so far on the site where the industries will be planted.

On the ground it was observed that  about 1.3km of road leading to the site has been tarred with bridges and culverts built, electricity  has been installed while 21 pillars have been planted round the industrial zone.  While presenting the Bamenda industrial Zone, the Technical Adviser at MAGZI  Ndifor Tita said  the zone  covers about 44 hectares of land and has been divided into eight platforms. So far, he went on, the works have been carried out there to make it convenient for industries to occupy. He said studies are still going on toinstall others facilities like water amongst others.

He reminded all that in 2012 MAGZI paid FCFA 220 million to the people that had land in that area.  According to the General Manager of MAGZI Christol Georges Manon, the zone might go operational by mid 2016 as more that 50 % of the work has been done. He thanked the people of Nkwen for being so cooperative. He called on other custodians of the lands in the region to offer more land as the 44 hectares of land is not enough to accommodate the number of companies that are already applying.

He however called on interested industrialists to deposit their applications at the regional delegation of mines Bamenda. Meanwhile, the Secretary General in the North West Governors office Absalom Monono Woloua called on MAGZI to speed up works on the site as the people of the region are anxious to see more industries.  He equally appreciated the work done so far and called on industrialists from the region to apply and occupy land.

Nigeria-Cameroun submarine cable goes live

MainOne has announced that the high capacity Nigerian-Cameroun Submarine Cable System (NCSCS) connecting Lagos, Nigeria and Kribi, Cameroun has been completed and went live in December. The new submarine cable system will address increasing demand for reliable broadband connectivity in Cameroun, and is a key component of the country's strategic plan to provide internet access to its citizens via a National Broadband Network.

The submarine cable installation, which started in June following a tripartite partnership between MainOne, The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications, Cameroun and Huawei Marine Networks, had investment provided by the Cameroun Government.

The six-pair, 1,100 kilometer repeater submarine cable system will deliver capacity of up to 12.8 Tbps to broadband users in Cameroun and is being lit with 40GB capacity. This extension is expected to boost Cameroun's extremely low fixed broadband penetration, currently estimated at 5 percent.

Built with branching units for strategic extension of its connectivity into Nigeria's Escravos in Delta State, Qua Iboe in Akwa Ibom State, and Bonny Island in Rivers State, MainOne has concluded plans for a distribution hub in Port Harcourt, designed to bridge the technology gap between the South-South and the rest of Nigeria. David Nkoto Emane, General Manager, Cameroon Telecommunications Corporation (CAMTEL), said the NCSCS system enables them to provide users with faster bandwidth connectivity at a significantly lower cost.

By providing direct connection to Nigeria, the cable system will also serve to enhance Cameroon's position as the major bandwidth hub in the region and internationally to Europe and beyond.

U.S. Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region of Africa Thomas Perriello departs today for an extended trip that will include stops in Brussels, Belgium; Rome, Italy; Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; Kigali, Rwanda; Bukavu, Goma, and Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC); Bujumbura, Burundi; and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The trip is focused on supporting regional efforts to resolve the crisis in Burundi and to support upcoming elections in the DRC.

The U.S. Government strongly supports the regionally-mediated Burundian dialogue relaunched on December 28, 2015, and is urging all stakeholders to remain committed to the process without preconditions. An inclusive dialogue remains the best route for peacefully resolving the crisis in Burundi and restoring the stability achieved by the Arusha Agreement. The Special Envoy will engage with Burundian stakeholders and East African Community (EAC) leadership about next steps for advancing the dialogue, including moving the dialogue to Arusha, Tanzania.

The United States is committed to supporting the DRC in holding elections per the constitution. The Special Envoy will meet with Congolese stakeholders to discuss next steps in the electoral process and the importance of respecting human rights throughout an electoral cycle, including the rights to peacefully assemble and to free speech. While in the DRC, the Special Envoy will also continue to work to resolve the impasse over adoptions andengage with stakeholders working to counter the illegal trade in Congolese natural resources and promote conflict-free minerals.

The trip will culminate in Addis Ababa, where the Special Envoy will join the U.S. delegation to the African Union Summit.

Lionel Messi wins 2015 Ballon d’Or ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar

Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi was awarded the 2015 Ballon d'Or at Monday's gala in Zurich.

Messi, 28, had finished behind longtime rival Cristiano Ronaldo in both 2013 and 2014 but was a clear winner of FIFA's top individual honour for a record fifth time in his career.

After a year in which Barca won five trophies, including the Champions League and La Liga titles, the Blaugrana No. 10 had been an overwhelming favourite to take the prize.

He scored 52 goals and 26 assists in 61 games for club and country in 2015.

"It is a very special moment for me to be back here on this stage, winning again another Ballon d'Or after being there in the audience watching Cristiano win," Messi said in accepting his award.

"It's incredible this is my fifth. It's much more than anything I've dreamed of as a kid. I want to thank everyone who voted for me and I want to thank my teammates.

"And lastly, I want to thank football in general for everything it has brought me. Both the bad and the good. Because it has made me learn and grow."

Voting for the Ballon d'Or award is by men's national team captains and head coaches, along with international media representatives selected by France Football magazine.

Messi -- also the Ballon d'Or winner in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 -- received 41.33 percent of votes (third highest in history), while Ronaldo was easily second with 27.76 percent, and Neymar earned 7.86 percent.

Messi and Neymar helped Barca win La Liga, the Copa del Rey and Champions League in 2015, plus the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

Ronaldo scored more goals than Messi over the calendar year, netting 54 for Madrid to go with three more for Portugal, but it was not enough for his club to win any silverware.

Neither man voted for the other in their respective top threes -- they never have -- with Messi choosing Barca teammates Luis Suarez, Neymar and Andres Iniesta, and Ronaldo also selecting a trio of club colleagues in Karim Benzema, James Rodriguez and Gareth Bale.

It was the fifth straight year, and seventh in the last eight, that Ronaldo and Messi have finished 1-2 in voting. Only Andres Iniesta interrupted that streak by finishing second in 2010. Kaka, the last player other than Messi or Ronaldo to win, presented the Barcelona man with the trophy on Monday night.

Road Accidents And The Sanctity Of Life

The year began in a most dispirited manner as death struck again some ten kilometers out of Bafia on the Yaounde-Bafoussam national road in an unending spiral of killings on the nation's highways which seems to defy all governmental initiatives to keep our roads a bit safer.

Human factors and the hackneyed blames on the state of the highway, as usual, will be blamed for this excessive bloodletting which, this time, took an unprecedented 19 lives among whom were some freshly-graduated servicemen eagerly heading for their villages to present their graduating certificates to their parents and other loved ones.

What a tragedy! Even innocent nursing babies were killed. The young student gendarmes who graduated just last week were actually given a brief 15-day permission to visit their families after a two-year intense training period before taking up their postings. Now, they will neither meet these loved ones nor ever be present to serve and defend the fatherland as they had anticipated. Who knows what the babies and the other youthful dead would have grown up to be?  As the commiseration over these deaths continues, it is time to ask some useful questions surrounding the Bafia accident.

A senior official of the ministry of Transport present at the accident site, is said to have revealed that the bus driver had done several rounds between Yaounde and a number of cities in the West Region requiring him rather to be taking a deserved rest at the time of the accident and, in so doing, stretching human capability beyond reasonable limits. Reporters on the scene of the accident also observed that as road security agents tried the best they could to extract the dead and wounded from the carcass, officials of the transport company whose bus was involved in the accident were rather surreptitiously trying to obliterate the company name on the bus in wanton neglect of what was the most urgent at that time: attending to the wounded or trying to save lives.

Many relatives arriving at the scene of the accident also noticed that within a few hours of the accident, the carcass had been removed, not necessary to ease the flow of traffic, but ostensibly to leave no sign about the company's involvement in the accident. This is not new. In countless cases, the Ministry of Transport has taken disciplinary action against erring public transport companies, leading even up to suspension. But many of such companies circumvent the measure by simply registering new company names and running the same buses with disarming impunity.

That the bus owners adopt this attitude is enough to say they absolutely have no remorse even in the face of a hecatomb in the likes of what occurred near Bafia; otherwise they will not put a driver on unending rounds without rest and will not show so much dispatch in cleaning off their corporate name from the bus wreckage or clear the carcass with the same expedition. Taking these nippy measures by the company owners is clear about their concern for their corporate image and the need to continue to make money and shows, rather clearly, that their focus is on making money.

But someone somewhere must be able to remind these heartless capitalists of the sanctity of human life and that if humans constitute useful capital on which they make their money because if there are no human beings, the buses will never be full anyway! The need to project the sanctity of human life is essential in any road safety strategy and government, as well as trade unions of the transport sector and other stakeholders are being summoned before their responsibilities of holding these transport companies to account in the respect of human lives.

SCC Summons Etoundi Oyono Over Embezzlement Allegations

Cameroon Journal, Yaounde – Etoundi Oyono, suspended former General Manager of the Douala Port Authority, PAD, who returned to the country on December 22, 2015, after allegations he fled the country to avoid charges of fraud and embezzlement has been summoned by the Special Criminal Court, SCC, to answer two charges of embezzlement of state funds before the state court.

Etoundi, who was feared ‘missing’ after he did not return to the country from an official mission to Amsterdam – Holland, was later said to have been receiving medical treatment abroad after the September 21, 2015, mission.

we gathered that Oyono is due to appear before the SCC on Friday, January 15.

The PAD general manager, who was eventually replaced by an interim in his absence, is not oblivious of the charges against him as he has been called by the SCC more than once to answer same charges of embezzlement of public funds.

we learned that Oyono has to answer charges related to financial impropriety. It is alleged that CAMERICRUS Corporation, a company involved in fishing and related activities along Cameroon’s coastal waters sometime in the past took Oyono to court for violating the terms of the cooperation agreement they signed with the government of Cameroon represented by Oyono. They have also alleged that Etoundi, while serving as PAD GM, funneled the sum of 45 MFCFA meant for the gov’t into his personal account instead of the state treasury.

Oyono is also being accused of diverting the sum of 60 MFCFA into his private account, attributing it to a debt owed one Mr. Tessa, when he was manager of the Cameroon Debt Recovery Corporation, SRC.

CATTU Calls off Strike, But Vows to Paralyze System if Gov’t Backtracks

The Cameroon Teachers’ Trade Union, CATTU, as well as the Teachers’ Association of Cameroon, TAC, have called off a strike action they had earlier announced, but vowed tore-embark on it should government backtrack from any of the resolutions they both worked out.  They warned of “disastrous consequences for the system.”

Both trade unions had called for a school boycott in protest of what they considered the ‘francophonisation’ of the Anglo-Saxon system of education in Cameroon.

However, after a meeting with higher education authorities in Yaounde, they made a near sudden U-turn that has been fueling speculations that they received kick-backs. Tasang Wilfred, Executive Secretary General of CATTU has denied they took any bribe.

According to Tasang, the strike was initially called for two reasons: “First, that Francophone student teachers be barred from practicing on Anglophone students and secondly, the withdrawal of Francophone teachers from Anglophone schools and also the withdrawal of Anglophone teachers from Francophone schools.”

Tassang said after a meeting with a joint delegation of TAC and CATTU, Minister of Higher Education, Jacques Fame Ndongo, took a firm commitment that such decisions would be reversed immediately, reason why the strike action was suspended. He said beginning this week when the student teachers from ENS and ENSET Bambili go on teaching practice, Francophones amongst them will have to go and practice in Francophone schools.

The CATTU chief strongly refuted allegations that their “mouths were watered in Yaounde,” but expressed satisfaction that “what watered their mouths were the successes they scored following their meeting, all in the interest of the students and the Anglo-Saxon system of education.” He was categorical that no amount of money in this country would buy him.

We gathered that other resolutions arrived at included the withdrawal of Francophone lecturers and administrators from the University of Bamenda in Bambili, and for the entry requirement into ENS Bambili and ENSET Bambili and Kumba be certificates issued by the GCE board. Also, they also agreed that all Francophones (those who did the French sub system of education) currently reading English in Bambili be withdrawn, the MCQ system be revised and finally that a special recruitment be made exclusively for Anglophones of the North West and South West regions into ENS and ENSET as is the case with the Northern regions following the creation of ENS Maroua.

Despite Holding Multiple Positions, Fru Ndi Warns SDF Members against Post Accumulation

John Fru Ndi; National Chairman of the Social Democratic Front (SDF), has told reporters that the SDF is strongly against militants holding multiple positions of responsibility in the party. He made the statement in spite of the fact that he himself doubles many positions in the party, such as Chairman of the SDF National Advisory Council, Chairman of the SDF National Executive Committee, Chairman of the SDF National Investiture Committee and onetime SDF senatorial candidate.

Speaking to reporters at his Ntarinkon residence last week, the SDF chieftain who lashed out at some party militants who are gunning for more than one political office in the party, said the SDF is not in support of militants holding more than one position within the party.

Fru Ndi reminded militants that the party’s National Executive Committee, held late last year had stressed that no SDF militant occupies more than one office.

“So any militant who stubbornly occupies more than a single position should be aware that he or she is putting a stop to his/her political career within the SDF’’ he warned.

Fru Ndi was apparently challenging some party mayors, district or regional chairmen who want to use their positions to contest for some more positions. He noted that the party is a democratic party that wants the grassroots members to benefit from the political positions too.
