Saudi Arabia will pay a 'high price' for Shia cleric's execution, says Iran

Saudi Arabia will pay "a high price" for executing prominent Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr on Saturday, Iran’s foreign ministry said. Ministry spokesperson Hossein Jaber Ansari strongly condemned the execution, which came after his Shia country repeatedly asked its Sunni-ruled rival to pardon the cleric.

"The Saudi government supports terrorist movements and extremists, but confronts domestic critics with oppression and execution... the Saudi government will pay a high price for following these policies," he said, quoted by the official IRNA news agency.

Nimr, 56, was a driving force of the protests that broke out in 2011 in Eastern Province, where the Shia minority of Saudi Arabia complains of marginalisation.

"The execution of a figure like Sheikh al-Nimr, who had no means to follow his political and religious goals but through speaking out, merely shows the extent of irresponsibility & imprudence," said Ansari.

MTN Foundation partners Kakadu, Wakaa to Boost Musical Theatre

As part of its efforts in contributing to the advancement of theatre and performing arts in Nigeria, MTN Foundation is sponsoring two notable stage plays – ‘Kakadu and Wakaa, The Musical,’ from the stables of Playhouse Initiative and Bolanle Austen-Peters Production respectively.

Note that some of the beneficiaries of the MTNF-sponsored Muson Scholar programme who have excelled in their chosen careers are part of the two plays.

For instance, two of the beneficiaries - Ayo Ajayi & Lawal Seyi who graduated in 2008 & 2014 respectively are part of the cast & crew for ‘Wakaa, The Musical.’ While the former is the play’s Music Director, the latter is the Tenor Sax.

Executive Secretary for the MTN Foundation, Ms Nonny Ugboma said the foundation is excited to see a crop of beneficiaries of its music scholarship programme in partnership with Muson School of Music distinguishing themselves in their chosen careers, applying what they have learnt in the course of their programme. She also said the foundation will not relent in its commitment to grooming the next generation of music scholars in support of the performing arts industry in Nigeria.

The MTNF music scholarship programme which is implemented in partnership with the Musical Society of Nigeria is targeted at students with a flair for music, and it provides them the opportunity to acquire qualitative music education leading to the MUSON Diploma in Music.

Over 130 musically talented students have graduated from the programme since the scholarship programme commenced in 2006, and another 60 are currently in training. ‘Kakadu, The Musical’ is a story of dreams, hopes, peace and war, of friendships and broken promises, of pain and loss, and of love and innocence.

It’s an exciting blend of the western music of the sixties that influenced musical expressions in the 1960s Africa, with highlife, afrobeat, contemporary and traditional Nigerian folk music,to produce the most wonderfully eclectic musical ever.

On the other hand, ‘Wakaa, The Musical’ is a play about the trials, successes and experiences of six young graduates with varied background, a wager between them after graduation has a twist when the realities of life and the folly of their choices hit them. Eventually they reunite, coming full circle.

The story reveals the struggle and challenge that young people face in present day Nigeria and abroad. ‘Wakaa, The Musical’ takes you on an emotional roller-coaster, and is a strong satire of Nigeria’s politics.

The two plays will hit the theatre as from December 29 and run through January 03, 2016.

Man killed after saving woman in New York City elevator accident

A 25-year-old man wished “Happy New Year” to a woman just before he saved her life by shoving her from a faulty elevator that suddenly took a plunge, but the brave act cost him his own life.

Stephen Hewett-Brown, 25, (left) was in the crowded elevator at 131 Broome St. on Manhattan’s Lower East Side when Erudi Sanchez, 43, (right) who lives in the building, stepped inside around 11:45 p.m. with her 10-year-old nephew to throw out trash.

“When I got into the elevator, I felt it dropping and I thought my feet would get caught in the gap but the man pushed me out and said, ‘Happy New Year,’” Sanchez told The Post on Friday in Spanish.
But suddenly, the malfunctioning elevator dropped farther and Brown’s body was caught between it and the third floor, Sanchez said.
“I saw he was trapped and the elevator was crushing him. It was awful,” she said.
The woman’s son-in-law Emanuel Coronado, 23, desperately tried to pull Brown out, but it was too late.
“I feel bad I couldn’t save him. I tried to pull him out but the weight of the elevator was too heavy,” said Coronado, who was still shaken up by the horrific accident.
He said a woman in the elevator who appeared to be with Brown was in hysterics as she witnessed him being mangled.
“She was crying. He was saying, ‘I can’t breathe. Please help me,’” Coronado recalled. “To me, he is a hero. My mother-in-law might not be alive right now.”
A witness told The Post that Hewett-Brown and the other people in the elevator, except for Sanchez, were dressed up and headed to a New Year’s Eve party on the 15th floor.
FDNY officials said a 911 call came in at 11:54 p.m. — and emergency responders were on the scene just five minutes later.
“It was a tragic call, a very unfortunate incident,” said an FDNY spokesman.
Sanchez was grateful for Brown’s selfless last act.
“He did a very valiant act to save me. We want to thank him and his family and pray that God gives them peace and comfort. It’s something I’ll never forget,” she said.

The traumatized woman also said the building is known to have issues with the elevators.
“They don’t do a good job repairing them. Two months ago we got stuck inside and had to press the alarm button and were rescued after 15 minutes,” she said.
Numerous complaints about elevators at the building have been filed with the city Department of Buildings, some as recently as June 22, according to records.
Meanwhile, friends and family of Brown were in mourning Friday at his Eastchester home.
“I’m grieving my son. We don’t want to say anything,” Brown’s mom told reporters at their Eastchester home.
Brown — who went by the nicknamename StevOD — frequently posted his own written and recorded rap songs on SoundCloud and was working on an EP album, according to social media.
Ejiro Omenih, 22, said he wasn’t surprised to hear of his close pal’s heroic act.
“That’s the kind of heart he had. He’s always been like that, very responsible, caring about other people,” said Omenih through tears.
“He’s the head of the family. He has been the breadwinner for years, taking care of his grandmother, his mother, younger sister and a younger brother, Chris.”

Two-year-old girl tragically dies just two days after Christmas from swallowing a battery

The day after Christmas, 2-year-old Brianna Florer was laughing and jumping around with her older brother and two sisters opening presents at her grandparents' home. The next day the precocious blond-haired toddler was dead.
An X-ray of her tiny body showed the "killer" was a shiny, silver button battery.
“On Saturday she was fine,” maternal grandfather Kent Vice said. “It was a perfect Christmas.”
Brianna had not been feeling well for a couple of days, throwing up and running a low-grade fever, he said.
Late Sunday, Brianna threw up blood, and her body turned a blue color. Her parents, Brian and Stephanie Florer, who live in rural Delaware County, called the Jay ambulance, which met them at a convenience store to check Brianna's condition.

“She threw up again,” Vice said. “It was a massive amount of blood, and they rushed her to the Grove hospital.”
The Grove physicians quickly diagnosed Brianna's problem, and she was taken by ambulance to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, where she was rushed into surgery, he said.
Bad weather had grounded all medical transportation by helicopter, Vice said.
“They operated on her for 2½ hours, but they couldn't stop the bleeding,” Vice said. “They believed the battery ate through to her carotid artery by way of her esophagus.”
“One minute she is perfect, and the next minute she is dead,” Vice said. “We had no idea when she swallowed it (the battery).”
The family learned Brianna probably swallowed the battery within six days of her death.
Vice said he wants to do something about button batteries. “I want to keep these things out of houses,” he said. “They are dangerous.”
A Go Fund Me account has been set up to help the family with funeral expenses.
Eddie Johnson with the state medical examiner's office said the child's autopsy is pending, and it would be two to four months before an official cause and manner of death is known.

There were 53 reported cases in Oklahoma of children and adults swallowing a button or disk battery this year, said Randy Badillo, Oklahoma Poison Control Center senior specialist. “No fatalities have been reported to us,” he said.
Normally the battery passes through the digestive system, he said.
“But, if the battery lodges in the esophagus or digestive tract, it can open and release an alkaline substance that can cause corrosive or burning injuries,” Badillo said.
From 2005 to 2014, there were 11,940 battery-swallowing incidents involving children under the age of 6 nationally, according to the National Capitol Poison Center in Washington, D.C. Of those cases, 15 children died, and another 101 suffered major medical problems.
“These devastating outcomes occur in small children when batteries get stuck in the esophagus,” said Dr. Toby Litovitz, center physician.
When a lithium button battery lodges in a child's esophagus, it causes an electrical current to go through the tissue, she said.
“The electrical current is causing more damage because it is splitting the water surrounding the button battery and forming hydroxide, which is an ingredient in lye. Imagine dropping little tiny drops of lye in one place in the esophagus,” Litovitz said.
The lye substance perforates the esophagus and goes into whatever tissue is nearby — it can be the aorta or the trachea.
Serious complications also have been seen when small batteries are placed in the nose or ear — another situation where urgent removal is critical, Litovitz said.
“The important thing to remember is,  these batteries are everywhere.”
Vice was close to his granddaughter. He handled caretaking duties for Brianna when she was an infant for three weeks after her parents returned to work.
“She never — not one time — had a bad day,” Vice said, his voice cracking with emotion. “She was always happy and laughing. “I took care of her — she was just an angel.”
