Kenya: Two foreigners including a Cameroonian arrested with $693mn fake money

The Kenyan police on Monday busted an international money laundering scheme involving a Cameroon and a Niger national who were arrested with having possession of $693 million worth of fake money stored in a house in Nairobi. Inspector General of Police, Joseph Boinett disclosed that a further 369 million of fake money was seized following a tip-off by a member of the public.

The police chief disclosed that security officers came across the haul following a tip-off by a member of the public.
He added that a Kenyan national had been conned off by the duo 40 million shillings($390,000) purportedly in exchange of US dollars and Euros that had been shipped in from Syria.
The subsequent police operation led to the discovery of $693 million in fake currency, he said in a statement issued in Nairobi.
Apart from the money, the police also discovered money-printing machines, money cutters, scanners, five safes, two computers, chemicals, masks and foil paper were also found in the house along Mombasa road.
He disclosed that Kenya has in the past received complaints from the government of Comoros over certain foreign individuals staying in Kenya are manufacturing fake currencies and circulating it in the economy.

Nfon Mukete May Have Been Sidelined From Biya’s New Year Wishes Ceremony for Daring The Regime With Anglophone Marginalisation Issues

Nfon V.E Mukete
It is emerging that Nfon V.E. Mukete, Senator and Paramount Ruler of the Bafaws, may have been systematically prevented from participating in the annual New Year wishes ceremony held at the Unity Palace for President Biya on Tuesday January 5, as pay back to his recent advocacy against Anglophones marginalization in Cameroon.
The Cameroon Journalgathered from a source at Nfon’s palace in Kumba that a courier mail agent did not deliver Senator Mukete’s invitation for the event – not until the same morning – less than two hours to the event which began at 10am. The source noted that it was practically impossible for the chief to make it to Yaounde from Kumba, even by space craft.
The courier agent told our palace source that they were by no means responsible for the late delivery. He said that the mail was delivered in due time; from the time it was deposited at their agency in Yaounde, suggesting that the senders should be blamed for not effecting the transfer in good time.
Some Bafaw elites have been quick to submit that the delay was a calculated maneuver to prevent Nfon Mukete from meeting Biya face-to-face. Though they did not immediately point accusing fingers at anyone, they said that the perpetrators might have carried out the scheme with the intention to frustrate the vocal statesman from may be using such an opportunity to briefly speak to Biya about the Anglophone problem.
“If I am Nfon Mukete, I will write to Biya and explain to him what happened and urge him to unmask the plotter(s),” one of the elite who elected anonymity told the source
Mukete has since become one of the major critiques of the Biya’s regime marginalization of Anglophones. On Saturday September 26, 2015, he publicly confronted Chantal Biya’s envoy, Alexis Ndjolo for addressing predominantly English speaking primary school pupils in Kumba in French.
The drama unfolded at the Kumba municipal grandstand, during the launching of a social vaccination campaign promoted by Chantal, the first lady.
While Ndjolo was presenting the report in French, Nfon Mukete, visibly upset, got up from his seat, confronted South West governor and threatened to leave the ceremonial ground if the speech wasn’t presented exclusively in English.
Also, during the official launching of his book, ‘My Odessy,’ at the Yaounde Conference Center, Mukete decried the abuse of the English language, stating that Anglophones are suffering from the situation. He had called on the powers that be to quickly do something before Cameroon becomes a monolingual country.
As president of the South West Chiefs Conference, Nfon Mukete also led some 248 chiefs to write a memo to Biya, advocating an immediate end to the gross marginalization of Anglophones in Cameroon.
It is being said among the elites that the regime is surreptitiously trying to sideline him for daring the regime with Anglophone issues.

Gov’t Vows to Prosecute Those Who Submit Fake Documents for Contract Bids

Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi
Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi , Public Works Minister

The Minister of Public Works has vowed to sue contractors who include falsified documents in bid documents submitted for contracts awards.
Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi was talking to contractors he summoned at his cabinet yesterday to explain why they had not completed contracts awarded them.
Opening the five day working session with the contractors, he stated sternly; “I want to inform you that when we are done working with you here. We will examine your documents. It will no longer suffice for you to present a vehicle owner’s document, we will go out there and see the vehicles. If we find out you lied in your documentation, we will sue you.”
A total of 29 companies were present. Some five others failed to show up. Some of them had completely abandoned road maintenance projects while others had suspended work.
“I convened this meeting because we realized that 406 contracts are supposed to be executed on our roads as far as maintenance is concerned. But unfortunately, as you can see, the state of our roads is unacceptable. We have called these contractors so that together we can identify what their difficulties are and what can be done about it”, the minister told The Cameroon Journal in an interview, shortly after the opening of the working session.
The Journal gathered from the communication unit of the ministry that several maintenance projects earmarked for 2014 and 2015 were never executed. Government has set aside over 41billion francs CFA for work to be completed on portions of the said roads which require periodic maintenance. These include the Yaounde-Pont Ndoupe-Douala-Limbe-Idenau road; the Carrefour Nsimalen-Ebolowa road; and the Ebolowa- Ambam stretch of the national road number 2.
Some of the contractors denied shouldering the blame for non-completion of road maintenance projects. The companies concerned are NEO TP Sarl, SOCOTREX TP Sarl, AN’NDAL Sarl, Ets Aboubakar Chetima, Groupement PTS Construction/MISEP,PANI,TRABES,TE Talom Tech, Jean Dupuch Export, ALCATOR, EBM, MEDCOM Sarl, Motase and Sons, Groupement Bofas/Tamso, Swin Company Ltd among others.
Pierre Celestin Ntep of SOCOTREX TP Sarl, told The Journal that it is due to delays in administrative procedures that a road maintenance contract his company was supposed to complete in 2014, would only be completed by March 2016.
Souffo Tchinda, on his part, said his company could not complete a road maintenance project within deadline because of time-consuming government control processes. “We are not to blame, and I would not blame government because the control process is very important” he told The source
Some of them complained that construction work is sometimes hindered by protesting citizens who are disgruntled by meager indemnities paid for their landed property on which a road is to be constructed.
Over 89.5billion FCFA has been allocated from the road fund, for road maintenance across the country this year. These would include maintenance of both earth and tarred roads.
11.48billion of the total amount has been allocated for priority earth and tarred roads while 7.38 billion FCFA goes into maintenance of priority rural roads.
Some 21.28 billion FCFA is earmarked for periodic maintenance of the Yaounde-Pont Ndoupe-Douala-Limbe stretch of the national road number 3 while 3.72billion is allocated for protection of national heritage and road maintenance control missions.

Former Minister Mounchipou Seydou Dies Suddenly

 Former Minister Mounchipou Seydou

The former minister of post and telecommunication, Mounchipou Seydou who was sacked and later jailed for embezzlement of public funds has died at the age of 69.
The former minister released from Kondegui prison in March 2014 died yesterday at his Foumban residence where he had regained his position as traditional ruler of a small village called Manka.
Details of the cause of his demise were still sketchy at press time. It should be recalled that the deceased was jailed for embezzling state funds amounting to some 300million FCFA when he served as Minister of Post and Telecommunication.
When he was released from prison after spending 15 years in it, he maintained he was innocent and still held firm his beliefs and support for the Biya regime, in spite of critics who had claimed he was a scapegoat in a shady-deal-gone-wrong.
During his “second homecoming” on March 1, 2014, he was welcomed in his Noun division of origin by cultural dance groups, teachers and citizens of all walks of life who came from all the nooks and crannies of the division.
After the heroic welcome, he said “after being out of touch for 15 years and after going on retirement, I preferred to return to the village and live close to my people. I will be more useful to them here than in my Obili residence in Yaounde. I dedicate my time to returning order in my family. In my absence, many children dropped out of school. It is my duty to mobilize the whole community as regards local development. I read so many newspapers and listened to the radio while in prison. We are going to use our relations with the administration to boost development in this village.”
Mouonchipou was last seen in public during the celebration of the feast of the ram in 2015.

Consumers’ League Drags Orange, MTN, ART to Court Over 4G

4g

The Cameroon Consumers’ League has dragged two mobile telephone service providers; Orange Cameroon and MTN Cameroon to court over what it termed “poor treatment and extortion of consumers” with the propagation of a 4G network that doesn’t in the country.
The country’sTelecommunications Regulatory Agency (ART) was also sued for failing on its part to sanction the operators.
We learned the case comes up for hearing on January 28, at the Yaounde Magistrate Court.
According to the suit, the Cameroon Consumers’ League is asking the court “to examine and consider that since December 16, 2015, a deceptive publicity of the 4G is being circulated by Orange and MTN, under the watchful eyes and complicity of ART.”
They want the court to cause the institutions to pay damages, considering that Cameroonian consumers have spent huge sums of money to acquire a service that doesn’t exist.
It should be noted that on January 7, the Regulatory Agency dismissed any existence of the 4G network as being advertised by the telephone service providers in the country.
In an official statement signed by ART’s general manager, Jean Louis Beh Mengue, the telecommunications regulator told consumers that although operators were advertising it, 4G was not yet available in Cameroon.
The communiqué made clear that the connection speeds offered by MTN and Orange did not meet 4G requirements.
Part of the ART statement read: “Some network operators have launched major communication campaigns announcing they were now offering 4G in Cameroon.
The Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ART) would like to underline that 4G consists in a set of systems that provide mobile telecommunications services worldwide regardless of location, network or terminal equipment used. These systems offer access to the most advanced telecommunications services of the moment.
Said mobile services are considered “very high speed”, with theoretical speeds above 100Megabits per second. In practice, these rates are generally lower than this value.
The statement summarily exposed the falsehood in Orange and MTN promotions, hence the Consumers’’ League petition for compensation.

Ex-boyfriend killed NY students, himself

A 24-year-old man distraught over a recent breakup stabbed to death his ex-girlfriend and a fellow college athlete she was with in her off-campus bedroom before apparently killing himself with the same knife, police said Monday.

Colin Kingston, of Geneseo, entered Kelsey Annese's apartment around 6 a.m. Sunday near the State University of New York at Geneseo in upstate New York, police officer Jeffrey Szczensiak told reporters Monday. Kingston, who brought a large knife he had recently purchased, found her with another student, Matthew Hutchinson, of Vancouver, British Columbia.

Kingston, a former student at the school, killed them both. It's possible that Annese, 21, and Hutchinson, 24, were sleeping when Kingston entered, but police were not sure. Kingston called his father before killing himself, Szczensiak said.
"All indications are that Mr. Kingston used the same knife to take his own life," Szczensiak said. He added that Kingston had recently made suicidal comments, and that he had no criminal history.
The deaths of the two students — a women's basketball team captain and a men's hockey player — was a big blow to the school.
"It is a profoundly sad day for the college and village of Geneseo," college president Denise Battles said, in a shaky voice nearing tears. "We realize that members of our community will handle this tragedy differently. We will be supplying professional counseling services for Kelsey's teammates."
Annese wore the number 32 because it is the same number her father wore when he played for Geneseo, according to the college's website.
Her coach, Scott Hemer, said the senior education major was selfless, and "a grinder" with a work ethic respected by her coaches and teammates.
"Kelsey will always be one of my all-time favorite players not because of anything she will have her name next to in the record book, but because of the type of person she was," Hemer said.
Hutchinson had volunteered for more than three years at the Geneseo Fire Department, making a point to take every training opportunity despite his packed schedule as a student athlete, said fire chief Andrew Chanler.
"Matt did everything at the highest level," Chanler said. "He put effort into these things like nobody else."
Chanler said Hutchinson wanted to be a professional firefighter after college and had worked last summer as a forest firefighter back home in British Columbia.
There were no signs of a break-in at the off-campus home primarily populated by women's basketball team members.
"All indications in our investigation at this time is that there was no forceful entry," Szczensiak said, "although several doors were locked, a rear door was unlocked."

J. Cole forced to admit he is married after his Director let it slip

J. Cole announced that he was engaged to his long-time girlfriend around this time last year, but Cole, who is usually pretty quiet on social media, has been keeping his relationship status on the down-low since then.
During an interview at the #MLKNow event with Creed director Ryan Coogler, the director accidentally let it slip that Cole did in fact get married, which Cole confirmed. Being able to keep that news quiet for this long is an achievement. Congrats to them. Watch the video below:

Bride jilted at altar quits job and sells home to travel around the world

After being left standing at the altar, a jilted bride quit her job and swapped weddings for wanderlust.
Heartbroken Katy Colins, 30, sold her house and her car and booked a one-way ticket to south east Asia after having her big day called off.
Little did she know that backpacking around Thailand, India and Nepal on her own would lead to her achieving a childhood dream of becoming a published author.

Katy, from Formby, England, has secured a three-book deal with Carina UK, an imprint of world-renowned publisher Harper Collins.
The former Manchester Airport public relations worker told how she was left confused and disillusioned with life after being jilted by her long-term boyfriend and sold “anything that wouldn’t fit into a large backpack” before jetting off to Thailand on her own.

Katy told the Liverpool Echo:
“Everyone did think I was a little mad especially as I’d never travelled anywhere by myself before but it just felt right.
“I needed the time away from everything and everyone I knew to find myself, but it wasn’t as cheesy as that.”
With a degree in English and journalism from Salford university, Katy said she always dreamed of one day writing a novel.
She kept a travel blog, mainly to keep family and friends updated during her trip, which grew and grew in readers.

Katy said:
“People who weren’t related to me started reading my blog and sending me emails, telling me how brave I was to quit it all and go.
“I received messages from other newly-single men and women who said they read my blog as an inspiration - that just because you’ve been dumped it doesn’t mean you have to listen to bad power anthems and devour ice-cream.
“You can use this as a catalyst for something much bigger and better.”

As she travelled around south-east Asia and India, Katy said the passion to start putting her experiences into words was hard to resist.
She said:
“I started writing a few chapters, not fully aware that they would be the start of a novel but mostly as a way to clear my head.
“Although I was experiencing things that I would never have imagined seeing, such as the Taj Mahal and trekking through the Himalayas, I was still working through the feelings that I wouldn’t be making wedding scrapbooks or be living the married life, well not just yet at least.
“I began to think what if you were given a second chance to find yourself?’”

Katy has since backpacked around South America for six months and lived in France teaching English for the past two years.
She was living in a small fishing town in northern France when she received news about the book deal.

Katy said:
“Ironically, an editor called me on what would have been our third wedding anniversary. “It is poignant to think how far I’d come through hard work, being brave and wanting to live the biggest life I could.”

Katy’s journey inspired her to write the first novel in The Lonely Hearts Travel Club series, a light-hearted romantic comedy, which has been described as “Bridget Jones goes backpacking”.
Destination Thailand, the first book in the series, follows hapless Georgia Green who spends what should have been her big day sobbing into a warm sex-on-the-beach cocktail wondering where it all went wrong.

She is forced to make a bucket list of her new life goals and packs her bags for a long-haul adventure to Thailand as she tries to discover herself once again.
With her unworn wedding dress still hanging in her wardrobe, Katy now thinks back to her ex calling everything off as the best thing that ever happened to her.

She said:
“His decision, although devastating at the time, was the wake-up call I needed. I had a good job, a lovely house and lived a comfortable lifestyle but it lacked adventure.
“That is something I hoped travelling halfway around the world on my own would give me, and luckily it paid off.
“I have climbed an active volcano in Chile, slept in a Thai jungle, got covered in Holi powder in India, skydived in France, and even taken a flight past Mount Everest. “I’ve experienced things that I would never have dreamed possible but the highlight is being able to call myself a writer. Nothing compares to that.
“I am a huge optimist and believe that everything happens for a reason. Life is about saying yes, being brave and knowing deep down that it will all end up alright.”

EMS official dies of heart attack after responding to car crash involving his daughter

A New Jersey EMS official who had served his community as a civil servant for more than three decades died of a heart attack after he responded to a car crash involving his daughter, officials said.

Captain Eskil “Scott” Danielson, 49, discovered his 19-year-old daughter was involved in a car crash as he and the rest of the Lakeland Rescue Squad responded to the scene about 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
“He had gotten up to go to that accident and within a few minutes, he had gotten a phone call from his daughter letting him know that she was in the accident,” his brother, Andover Township Police Chief Eric Danielson, told INSIDE EDITION.
After he helped treat his daughter, Alycia, and the other occupant of the other vehicle, Scott Danielson traveled to Newton Medical Center to check on her well-being, Eric Danielson said.

Scott Danielson suffered a massive heart attack and collapsed in the waiting room, his brother said. He was airlifted to Morristown Medical Center about 4:30 p.m. but could not be saved and was pronounced dead at 8:30 p.m., authorities said.
“They were hoping to do a medical procedure, but ultimately his heart wasn’t strong enough anymore,” Eric Danielson said.
Alycia Danielson was treated and released from the hospital that same day.
“I love you so much, daddy. I’ll take good care of mom, I promise. Please watch over us,” his daughter wrote on Facebook.
Scott Danielson leaves behind his wife, Tammy; his son, Aaron, 28, who is with the U.S. Air Force; and his 21-year-old daughter, Amanda. He is also survived by his father, Eskil “Skip” Danielson, retired from the Byram Township Police Department, where he served as police chief for 22 years, his mother Judy Danielson, and brother Kevin Danielson, who serves as a firefighter in Clifton

Miley Cyrus seen moving into ex-fiance Liam Hemsworth's Malibu home after she puts her ring back on

Rumours that Miley Cyrus and her former fiancée Liam Hemsworth had rekindled their engagement burst aflame on Sunday when the singer was spotted wearing a sparkler on her ring finger, a sparkler that looked strikingly similar to the one the 26-year-old Australian hunk had proposed to her with in 2012.

Despite being able to afford an army of movers, the singer turned up at the actors door looking ready to do some heavy lifting herself.

She wore a well-worn pair of black Chucks, a manky old pair of denim dungarees and an ill-fitting denim jacket.

Newly 're-engaged' Miley Cyrus has had a moving truck parked outside Liam Hemsworth's house.

The 23-year-old turned up at her former - and possible current - fiance's home on Friday in a U-Haul self-mover truck.

Liam looked a little less ready for manual labour as he emerged from his house, wearing brown trainers with navy slacks, and a short grey jacket with a black baseball cap.

N.Y. woman faces jail for calling former in-law 'stupid' in Facebook post

A US woman is facing a one-year prison sentence for violating a protection order by tagging victims in a Facebook post and making derogatory comments about them.
Despite being divorced from her ex-husband Rafael Calderon and issued with a protection order preventing her from contacting her ex-husband or his family, Maria Gonzalez of New York decided to tag her former sister-in-law Maribel Calderon in a Facebook post and call her 'stupid', according to the New York Law Journal.
Gonzalez also tagged Calderon in another post saying: "You and your family are sad ... You guys have to come stronger than that!! I'm way over you guys but I guess not in ya agenda."

Protection orders, also known as restraining orders, are court-issued orders that require one person (the one being restrained) to stay away from the person requiring protection, and this means specifically that the restrained person is not to hurt, threaten or communicate with the protected person at all.

You might think it should be obvious that "no communication" would include SMS text messages, phone calls, emails, IM chat messages and any form of contact through social media networks, but

Gonzalez argued in court that the protection order "did not specifically prohibit [her] from Facebook communication" with her ex-husband's family.
Unfortunately for Gonzalez, who was charged with second-degree criminal contempt, Acting Westchester County Supreme Court Justice Susan Capeci disagreed.
"The allegations that she contacted the victim by tagging her in a Facebook posting which the victim was notified of is thus sufficient for pleading purposes to establish a violation of the order of protection," Capeci wrote in the decision The People v. Gonzalez, 15-6081M, upholding the charges.
Capeci stated in her ruling that Facebook is considered to be a viable form of communication, citing a 2014 decision made by the New York Court of Appeals in the case of People v Horton. In that case, the judge presiding ruled that Facebook messages are equivalent to emails, after a defendant was found guilty of witness tampering by trying to "out" a confidential informant on Facebook and then sending her Facebook messages with threats intended to induce her not to testify against the defendant.

Gonzalez' court-appointed lawyer Kim Frohlinger told the New York Post that she would not be appealing the ruling.

Although such a case hasn't surfaced in the UK yet, it would be advisable for everyone to note that any form of digital messaging or communication over social media does in fact count as a form of communication, regardless of whether the message is sent privately or publicly.

TB Joshua files fresh application to stop trial over death of 116 persons

The Registered Trustees of the Synagogue Church Of All Nations, founded by Prophet TB Joshua, have filed another suit to stop the Lagos State Government from going ahead with their prosecution before the Lagos High Court in Ikeja over the death of 116 persons on September 12, 2014 when a six-storey building collapsed on the premises of the church in Ikotun area of the State.
In the fresh suit filed before Justice Kazeem Alogba of Ikeja High Court, the Trustees o
f the church are asking the court to stop their proposed arraignment before Justice Lawal Lateef-Akapo of the same court.

The Lagos State Government had had filed 111 counts against the Registered Trustees of SCOAN, two engineers and two companies over the death of the 116 persons.

The arraignment of the accused had been scheduled for Tuesday, January 19, 2016  before Justice Lawal-Akapo.

But in their fresh action, the applicants are urging Justice Alogba to call for the record of proceedings of a Lagos State Coroner Court, presided by Mr. Oyetade Komolafe, which indicted them and recommended them for criminal prosecutions.

Komolafe, who conducted an inquest into the death of the 116 victims of the SCOAN’s building collapse, had on July 8, 2015 decided that the building which killed them was built without approval, adding that its collapse was due to structural defect.

But SCOAN and its engineers - Messrs Oladele Ogundeji and Akinbela Fatiregun, had rejected the verdict, describing it as unreasonable and one-sided.

In September 2015, Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court in Lagos had dismissed two similar actions filed by the engineers to squash the coroner’s verdict and prevent their arraignment.
In their fresh suit before Justice Alogba, they are seeking a judicial review of the Coroner’s proceedings, for the purpose of quashing it.

They are also seeking an order of perpetual injunction restraining the Attorney General of Lagos State, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, or any officer under his authority from taking any step to enforce the recommendations of the Coroner, including their prosecution.
When the matter came up on Monday before Justice Alogba, the case could not go on as Magistrate Komolafe was absent in court and was not represented by any lawyer.
But a lawyer who represented the Attorney General, Barr. A. O Idowu however pleaded with the court for time to file a response to the suit, while Justice Alogba adjourned till February 4, 2016 for hearing.
Meanwhile, the State Government has vowed to challenge the fresh suit, as government was desirous of pursuing the issues relating to the matter to a logical conclusion.

Sex firm creates masturbation booth for overworked NYC men

A sex toy company trying to get a rise out of New Yorkers erected a head-turning promotional ploy on Fifth Ave.
Hot Octopuss unveiled what it called a “GuyFi” booth on 28th St. and 5th Ave. where men could, in theory, go to “relieve stress” mid-workday.

The masturbation-themed marketing scheme was inspired by a Time Out survey, which concluded that 39% of the New York men questioned admitted to masturbating while at work.

The booth was created to “take this habit out of the office and into a more suitable environment designed to give the busy Manhattan man the privacy, and the high-speed Internet connection, he deserves,” Octopuss said in a press release.

The booth was actually an out-of-service telephone kiosk outfitted with a black curtain, a folding chair, a laptop computer, and a Hot Octopuss ad along the side.
“At Hot Octopuss we are all about looking for new solutions to improve everyday life and we feel we’ve done just that with the new GuyFi booth,” Adam Lewis, Hot Octopuss co-founder, said in a statement. “We hope the city’s men enjoy using the space we’ve created in whatever way they want.”
A representative later told Mashable Friday that, “the brand is not actively encouraging people to masturbate in public as that is an illegal offense.”
People tweeted about the booth, lol.

Muslim employees quit manufacturing job after company changes prayer policies

Dozens of Muslim employees at a Wisconsin manufacturing company claim that they were forced to quit this week, after the company changed its prayer-on-the-job policy to one that prevents them from participating in their daily prayers to Mecca.
WBAY-TV reported that before Thursday, Somali Muslims employed by Ariens Manufacturing were allowed to leave the producing line twice a shift in order to participate in two of the five daily prayers required by the Islamic faith.

Ariens, which is based out of Brillion, WI, primarily manufactures snow blowers and riding mowers:
The new policy, as told to the station by a company spokesman, only allows the employees:
…to pray during scheduled breaks in designated prayer rooms. Our manufacturing environment does not allow for unscheduled breaks in production.”
The dozens of employees affected by the policy allege that praying only during a meal break goes against their religion. Masjid Imam Hasan Abdi, an employee from Green Bay, told the station:
“If someone tells you, ‘You pray on your break,’ and the break time is not the prayer time? It will be impossible to pray.”
Added former Ariens equipment painter, who held out his unemployment packet as he spoke to WBAY:
“We pray by the time. So they say, ‘If you don’t pray at the break time,’ they give us this [unemployment] paper to just leave.”
According to the company’s spokesman, the policy change impacts 53 of the company’s workers, with the majority of them opting to leave the company as a result of the new company.
The spokesman added that the company “put a considerable amount of effort” into finding a solution that would work for both sides, which included meeting with members of their Somalian employee group.
Dan Ariens, the company’s chairman and CEO, also wrote in an open letter posted to Twitter that reads, in part:
“We continue to be open to any of the employees returning to work under the new policy…
We respect their faith, we respect the work they have done at Ariens, and we respect their decision regardless of their choice to return to work or not.”

Per US law established by the the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission on religious tolerance in the workplace, “an employer does not have to accommodate an employee’s religious beliefs or practices if doing so would cause undue hardship to the employer.”
The Council for Islamic-American Relations (CAIR) is also calling on Ariens to reverse its policy, per a Tweet sent on Saturday.
