White Oscars: Stacey Dash calls for end of Black History month & BET off air

Actress Stacey Dash criticized those who have come out against the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences over the complete absence of non-white acting nominees at this year's Oscars - and called for the elimination of Black History Month and the cable channel, BET. Dash called the actions of stars like Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee to boycott the Oscars 'ludicrous,' and then took things a step further.What she said after the cut

'We have to make up our minds,' Dash said during an appearance on Fox & Friends' Outnumbered. "Either we want to have segregation or integration. And if we don't want segregation, then we need to get rid of channels like BET [Black Entertainment Television] and the BET Awards and the Image Awards where you're only awarded if you're black.'

She then added:

'If it were the other way around, we would be up in arms. It's a double standard.' 

Dash did not stop there either, saying later in the interview when again asked if BET should be on air: 'No, I don't think so, no. Just like there shouldn't be a Black History Month. You know? We're Americans. Period. That's it.'

BET was quick to respond to Dash's comment in an Instagram post, writing; 'Soooooo @realstaceyldash, can we get our check back... or nah? #Remember #YouWereOnTheGame #AndWeDontMeanTheRapper.'

It included a photo of the actress appearing on its program The Game, where she had a guest role, along with the snide remark about her dating the rapper The Game. 

Debra Lee, CEO of BET Networks, also said in a statement;

'Through our award shows and programming we have recognized incredible talent that simply does not get recognized elsewhere. African American contributions to American culture are countless and we cannot and should not wait for anyone to acknowledge them. 

R.Kelly opens up on relationship with the late Aaliyah and child pornography charges

R&B singer R.Kelly has opened up on the controversial stories that turned him into a tabloid regular.

The singer was alleged to be in a relationship with the late Aaliyah who was 15 year old at the time, and in 2008 he was also accused of filming himself having sex with a minor, a case he won in court.

 

He revealed in an interview with GQ that he doesn't regret the 'best friend' relationship he had with Aaliyah and that once you are found not guilty of charges in a law court be it murder or whatever,t hen you are not guilty.

"I will never have that conversation with anyone. Out of respect for Aaliyah, and her mother and father who has asked me not to personally. But I can tell you I loved her, I can tell you she loved me, we was very close. We were, you know, best best best best friends."

"I heard first of all this soft voice, but very…a lot of charisma," he recollected for the mag. "I saw her as a star the minute I heard her sing and dance...I said, 'This girl's gonna be a star, whether I work with her or not.'"

He asserted that he will always maintain that he did nothing wrong with Aaliyah.

"That's my answer forever. I have nothing to protect myself from. I'm still successful, and I've got an album out now, I'm gonna move on after this interview and go to the next interview and do another interview, and these questions are going to be asked," he concluded on the topic. "Can't satisfy everybody, unfortunately. I wish that I could."

Speaking about the child porn case, R Kelly said;

"When a person is found not guilty, they're found not guilty," he told GQ. "It doesn't matter if it's a murder case, it doesn't matter what case it is, when they're found not guilty, they're not guilty. And I think that a lot of haters out there wanted to see me go down."

Vatican offers homeless new mother a place to live after she gives birth nearby

Vatican officials offered to house a homeless woman who gave birth near St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday.
Italian police found the woman while patrolling the area—she had given birth on a piece of cardboard around 2 a.m. Wednesday, according to CBS News.

Officers covered the mother and child in their jackets to protect them from the near freezing temperatures, later taking them to a nearby hospital.

The woman received a visit from Monsignor Konrad Krajewski, who carries out Pope Francis’ charity missions. He offered her space at a home owned by the Vatican for mother and babies in need.

According to a Vatican spokesman, the woman has not decided if she will accept the offer.

L.A. to pay $24 million to 2 men who spent decades in jail for murders they did not commit

Los Angeles will pay more than $24 million to two men who spent decades in prison after they were wrongfully convicted of murder, officials said.  

Kash Delano Register won his freedom in 2013 after lawyers and students from Loyola Law School doubted a key prosecution witness’s testimony.

He was awarded $16.7 million by the Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday. It is the largest settlement in an individual civil rights case in the city’s history, according to reports.

Bruce Lisker, who was released from prison in 2009 after a Los Angeles Times investigation into his conviction, will walk away with $7.6 million.

 

Though their cases were unrelated, both men maintained that detectives ignored evidence that proved their innocence.

 

City Councilman Paul Krekorian told reporters on Tuesday the two cases were the “very unfortunate” result of police misconduct in the past, but did not reflect how the department operates today.

“It’s just regrettable that these two individuals spent the better part of their lives in prison as a result of the inadequacy of the investigations that happened back then,” said Krekorian, who heads the budget committee that weighs settlement payments.

Register, now 55, was arrested and charged in the 1979 armed robbery and murder of Jack Sasson, 78, after eyewitness testimony put him at the scene at the time of the shooting, the Times wrote.

 

Witness Brenda Anderson reportedly told police she heard gunshots and that she saw Register running from the scene.

 

Anderson picked him out of a photo lineup, officials said, but her sisters told police that her accounts were untrue.

 

Despite there being no recovered murder weapon, no fingerprints lifted and Register’s girlfriend’s insistence that he was with her at the time of the shooting, he spent 34 years behind bars for the crime.

 

Anderson’s sister, Sheila Vanderkam, reportedly testified that she tried to tell a detective that her sister had lied about seeing Register, but the investigator put a finger to his lips, meaning she should stay quiet.

 

Her other sister, Sharon Anderson, said that she, too, was ignored by police.

 

Register’s attorneys claimed that Anderson picked out Register under the threat of being prosecuted for credit card forgery and a recent theft if she didn’t choose someone.

 

Register was finally freed after a fresh examination of his case, spurred on after Vanderkam read many years later that he was still imprisoned. He was ultimately freed in 2013.

“After almost 37 years, I am more than ready to try to put this all behind me and move on with my life,” he told reporters.

Lisker, now 50, also said he was ready to move forward after spending 26 years in prison for the murder of his 66-year-old mother, Dorka.

 

Though happy to be vindicated, he told the Times:

“How can one place a monetary figure on a lifetime of stolen freedom, of crushed aspirations and a shattered reputation, on my mother’s tragic murder going unsolved and neglected for 33 years and counting? There are no words…”

At the time of the murder, Lisker, who had a reputation for fighting with his mother and a history of drug abuse, told police he saw her lying in the foyer and broke into the home to help her. They did not believe him.

A Times investigation in 2005 raised questions about the case against Lisker, pointing to details that showed the murder investigation was "sloppy and incomplete."

 

During a hearing in federal court challenging Lisker’s conviction, key elements of the prosecution’s case were undermined or disproved, including that a bloody print found in the bathroom was not in fact made by Lisker’s shoes as it was once thought to be. 

 

His attorneys also said that the lead detective ignored evidence that Lisker’s friend may have been a possible suspect.

 

Since his release, Lisker has married.  

General Semengue Dragged into FECAFOOT’s Mess Over Bounced Cheque

 A cheque recently made out by Tombi a Roko, the controversial President of the Cameroon Football Association, FECAFOOT, on the bank account of the association to Gen. Pierre Semengue, reportedly bounced.

The cheque in the amount of 100million CFA, was issued to Semengue in his capacity as President of the professional football league. It was meant to be used in facilitating the opening of this year’s football league in the country.

 Tombi had gone ahead to issue the cheque, despite injunctions from lawyers who have sued the association claiming that his election to head the organization was a fraud and thus renders him unqualified to have access to the bank accounts of the federation.

Tombi’s executive is still in court trying to fight the injunctions on the banks. However, his opponents who contest his election had announced he would be sued for attempted theft for trying to withdraw money from FECAFOOT accounts.

In a press release dated 17 January, General Semengue announced that the start of the football season is on the balance as a cheque of 100million FCFA issued by FECAFOOT to the league was rejected by the Commercial Bank of Cameroon for “technical reasons.”

Reports say the federation has sued United Bank of Africa and ECOBANK at the Yaounde Magistrate Court for blocking its funds. They would not disburse funds requested by FECAFOOT president per a decision of the Conciliation and Arbitration Chamber of the Cameroon National Sports and Olympic Committee, which had annulled his election as president.

The federation might have to sue the Commercial Bank of Cameroon too if it emerges that the bank is also withholding its funds for the same reasons as others.

In the mean time, FECAFOOT in a reaction to the press release issued by Semengue over the bounced cheque, stated that the only reason the bank did not honor the cheque was because it was observing new regulations of the Central African Banking Commission, COBAC.

In a press release signed on January 18, Patrick Eugène Ebode Tsanga, Secretary General of FECAFOOT, pointed out the new regulations of COBAC require only bank to bank transfers for amounts equal to or above 100million FCFA.

Pundits and sources at FECAFOOT have condemned Semengue for bringing the matter to the public. They say he issued the January 17 press release just to spite FECAFOOT. According to one of them, the retired army general should have simply contacted FECAFOOT with the bounced cheque, rather than issuing a press release to inform the public that the CBC bank refused to honour it.

The protesting candidates in last year’s FECAFOOT elections still hold that fresh elections must be organized in accordance with the decision of the Conciliation and Arbitration Chamber of the Cameroon National Sports and Olympic Committee.

The group which includes Hamadou Abdourahman, Joseph Antoine Bell among others, hold that John B. Ndeh in his capacity as vice president of the last undisputed executive bureau of the federation is supposed to take over and run the FA till a legally recognised team is elected.

This is due to the fact that former FECAFOOT president, Iya Mohamed is in jail for embezzlement of public funds at the Cameroon cotton development corporation where he was general manager.

Bishops Reiterate Need for Senior Gov’t Officials to Declare Their Assets

 Catholic Bishops of Cameroon have called on government to implement Article 66 of the Constitution that requires that senior government officials declare their assets and property when entering office and when leaving   office.

The President of the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon, Archbishop Samuel Kleda of the Douala Archdiocese made the demand in Batouri, East Region, and last weekend at the end of the 39^th annual seminar of the bishops.

“The Bishops stand firmly for the declaration of assets in compliance with Article 66 of the Constitution,” Kleda read in a final release at the end of the seminar. Present was the representative of President Paul Biya, Minister of Public Service and Administrative Reform, Michel Ange Angouing.

The bishops came up with the position on the heels of the report on the state of corruption in Cameroon. “Reverend Pastor Dieudonné Massi Gams, President of the National Anti-corruption Commission, presented to the bishops the true and preoccupying situation of corruption in Cameroon,” Samuel Kleda said in the press release.

The bishops’ appeal is coming at the time when Cameroon is celebrating the 10^thanniversary of the 1996 revised constitution of the country. The new constitution had as one of its provisions, the need for public officials to declare their assets both when entering and leaving office. So far, that has never happened.

Among other things discussed at the seminal were the role of the priest in family welfare. The Apostolic Nuncio to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, Piero Pioppo thanked families for their exemplarily unity, solidarity and diverse support to the church.

Khiv Raj Gurjar, from Jodhpur in the Indian state of Rajasthan, has taken extreme yoga to new heights - literally. He spends an hour each day striking yoga poses on a bicycle perched precipitously on the edge of a 300ft cliff.

He said: “When I balance and perform complex yoga postures on a cliff, I don’t feel fear or think that I will fall from this mountain.

"I can do anything on this mountain. I don’t panic anymore.”
It does help that he has 20 years of experience to keep him from plunging to a rocky death but that's not all, for Khiv, the practice serves as therapy to help him cope with intense personal tragedy.
On November 4, 2014, Khiv lost his son, grandson and wife in a road accident.

“It was terrible accident and it will take time to heal,” he said.

Khiv began practicing yoga at the age of 12, and says he has been visiting the cliff where he does his stunts since childhood.

“As a child, I used to come here from school. Then I brought a BMX cycle and started doing extreme yoga,” he said.

“I am confident that I will not fall, I believe in myself.”

A man of many talents, Khiv has represented his country at a national level as a cyclist and even competed in his country's national football league.

His granddaughter Yoga Gurjar, 15, says she is proud of her grandfather and wants to imitate his feats - but does worry that he will hurt himself.

ISIS slashes their fighters' pay by half

Following the US-led coalition which has seen ISIS lose lucrative oil fields and millions in cash, the terrorist group has slashed the wage of its fighters by half to £100-a-month. A new document released by the terror group's Treasury which is based in Raqqa, Syria, reveals that ISIS has decided to cut the salaries of all its fighters in half due to 'exceptional circumstances'.

The document does not state the reason for the cut but it is believed to be as a result of massive losses suffered by the group. Only this month, an airstrike hit a warehouse housing millions of dollars of the group's funding.

After quoting at length from the Koran the pronouncement says: 'So on account of the exceptional circumstances the Islamic State is facing, it has been decided to reduce the salaries that are paid to all mujahideen by half, and it is not allowed for anyone to be exempted from this decision, whatever his position.'

Despite the cut, the document states that the distribution of Zakat, a religious obligatory tax collected for poor Muslims, will not be hampered.

In December an international coalition launched a huge number of airstrikes against the terror organisation, targeting their oil fields.

Iraqi forces recently pushed ISIS fighters out of central Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, months after the armed group captured the key city about 60 miles west of Baghdad.

Last month it was revealed that ISIS is though to make around £52million a month through taxes, oil sales and selling illegal drugs.

Beyonce's mother, Tina Lawson, immediately contacted the FBI after a random fan made a threat against her daughter, Beyonce on her Instagram page yesterday. 

“I’m going to assassinate your daughter master plan I could only imagine what that blood smells like. That movie Carmen she played in is coming back to hunt her. Yeah, nigga, bottom lip in mouth face evil as f**k.” the user wrote on Tina Lawson’s page.

Beyonce's mum reacted to the comment, saying that she's reported the user to the authorities after another fan mentioned that she had reported the account to the FBI...
