Miracle baby weighing just 2 pounds, suffered liver failure, collapsed lungs and still survived

A 16 year old teenage mum has thanked the dedicated staff at a Teesside hospital for saving the life of her baby son who was born weighing just two pounds. Delivered at 26 weeks tiny Levi-Haydon Smith suffered multiple complications, including kidney failure, two collapsed lungs, fluid on the lung and jaundice.

But after spending nearly eight weeks being cared for at Stockton’s University Hospital of North Tees, Levi-Haydon is now back home in the arms of relieved mum Carla.
Now Carla, 16, and the baby’s grandma Joy, want to express their gratitude to the Neonatal Intensive Care unit that was only last year threatened with closure.

NHS England argued that North Tees was too small to justify designation as an LNU (Local Neonatal Unit) and recommended in October its NIC beds be transferred to Middlesbrough’s James Cook University Hospital.

The move sparked an outcry from parents and staff and more than 7,000 people signed an online petition against the threatened closure.

Then in December NHS England reassured that the unit at North Tees will now not be “significantly downgraded”.

Carla told The Gazette today:
“If it wasn’t for North Tees neonatal unit then my Levi-Haydon would possibly not be here today.
“They take such great care in looking after all of the babies that they deal with each day, they don’t miss anything, they are all so friendly and professional.
“I could not thank them enough for everything that they have done for me and my son.”
Carla was transferred to North Tees from her home in Carlisle in a blue lit ambulance at just 26 weeks in November. Carlisle does not have an intensive care baby unit.
Levi-Haydon was born at 9.20pm on Sunday, November 15.
“He was absolutely tiny,” said Carla. “He’s really been through a lot. It was horrible. He’s had kidney failure, his left and right lung collapsed, he had fluid on his lungs and he’s also had jaundice. “But they have done so well at North Tees, the staff are amazing.”
After nearly two months in Stockton, little Levi-Haydon was transferred back to Carlisle’s special care baby unit, and last week was allowed to go home with his mum.
Carla said her son “is now doing great” - and he still only weighs 3lbs 5 ounces!
Said his gran Joy Smith:
“We can’t thank them enough at North Tees - both the delivery ward and Ward 23 intensive care ward.
“They have been amazing. We honestly can’t thank them enough.”
North Tees neonatal unit ward matron Debbie Bryan said:
“We’re delighted that thanks to the care Levi-Haydon had from staff in the unit he was able to go home with his family.”

Blasts, gunfight in Indonesian capital; at least 6 dead

Militants launched a gun and bomb assault killing at least six people in the center of the Indonesian capital on Thursday, police said, in an attack that followed a threat by Islamic State fighters to put the country in their "spotlight."
Media said six bombs went off and a Reuters witness saw three dead people and a gunfight going on. One blast was in a Starbucks cafe and security forces were later seen entering the building.
Police said they suspected a suicide bomber was responsible for at least one of the blasts and up to 14 militant gunmen were involved in the attack, Metro TV reported.
"The Starbucks cafe windows are blown out. I see three dead people on the road. There has been a lull in the shooting but someone is on the roof of the building and police are aiming their guns at him," said a Reuters photographer.
Indonesia has been on edge in recent weeks over the threat posed by Islamist militants and counter-terrorism police have launched a crackdown on people with suspected links to Islamic State.
"We have previously received a threat from Islamic State that Indonesia will be the spotlight," police spokesman Anton Charliyan told reporters. But he said police did not know who was resposible.

He said three policemen and three civilians had been killed.
"I saw a police officer shot right in front of me," one witness told TV One.
One explosion went off in front of a shopping center called the Sarinah mall, on a main avenue. Media said a police post outside the mall was blown up.
Police snipers were deployed among hundreds of other security officers.

A U.N. building near the scene was in lock-down with no one allowed in or out, a witness said. Some other high-rise buildings in the area were evacuated.
Indonesia's central bank is located in the same area, and a spokesman for the bank said a policy meeting was going ahead and a decision on interest rates would be announced as planned later in the day.

An explosion was heard in the western suburb of Palmerah, according to a domestic media tweet, but police said they could not confirm a blast there.
Indonesia has the world's largest Muslim population, the vast majority of whom practice a moderate form of the religion.

The country saw a spate of militant attacks in the 2000s, the deadliest of which was a nightclub bombing on the holiday island of Bali that killed 202 people, most of them tourists.

Police have been largely successful in destroying domestic militant cells since then, but officials have more recently been worrying about a resurgence inspired by groups such as Islamic State and Indonesians who return after fighting with the group.

The last major militant attacks in Jakarta were in July 2009, with bombs at the JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels.

Suspect detained in death of US woman in Florence, Italy

A Senegalese immigrant was detained Wednesday in the strangulation death of a 35-year-old American woman, just hours after crime scene investigators returned to her Florence apartment to search for clues identifying her killer.
Ashley Olsen was found nude on her bed in her rented apartment on Saturday after her boyfriend had the owner open the door, alarmed that the woman had failed to respond to phone calls. The body had bruises and scratches on the neck, and an autopsy determined that she had been strangled with a cord or a rope.

The Italian news agency ANSA reported early Thursday that police detained the suspect Wednesday based on DNA evidence taken from the scene. Investigators had narrowed in on the suspect using video surveillance cameras along the route from the nightclub that showed them together Friday morning, a day before Olsen's body was found. The man was known to authorities for being involved in the local drug scene.

Authorities released no other details. The lead prosecutor had declined to comment on the case earlier Wednesday, and police officials say they are not authorized to speak to media during the investigation.

Olsen, originally from Summer Haven, Florida, had been living in Florence for three years, an active member of the expatriate community and art scene. She had moved to Italy to join her father Walter Olsen, who teaches in the Renaissance art city.

Walter Olsen issued a statement late Tuesday expressing the family's grief and confidence that the killer would be found.

"We are devastated that our precious Ashley has passed away resulting from a horrible and senseless crime," he wrote.
He described his daughter as "a beautiful and creative young woman, with a happy, exuberant and generous soul," adding: "We are heartbroken she was taken from us."

He asked that the family be left to grieve in peace and expressed "faith that the perpetrator will be found and sentenced."

Government has dismissed a false report by a dubious online publication, ZimEye, that President Mugabe collapsed and died while in the Far East where he is on his annual leave.
The website published the story under the headline: "Rumour rips CIO (Central Intelligence Organisation) that Mugabe has collapsed".
Presidential spokesperson and permanent secretary in the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, Mr George Charamba said the false rumours about President Mugabe's alleged death had become a usual chorus every January whenever he is on his annual leave.
"You can doubt that there can be a New Year, but you cannot doubt that there will be a story on the President's alleged death every January," he said.
"This is the way the website seeks to improve its hits in order to get dirty money from Google. There is a financial incentive to the grim lie.
"Government is exploring mechanisms for dealing with such extra territorial mischief. These websites ride on carriers, don't they?"
Some people picked the hoax that first appeared on the ZimEye website and started circulating it on social media.
The ZimEye website that is known for fabricating stories, published the story under the pretext of a letter to the editor by one of their readers.
Online media reports yesterday claimed that a South African radio station also picked up the false story and ran it before retracting it and apologising.

Dad allegedly kills 3 year old son because his 17 year old gf didnt like children

She did not want to share him with his 3-year-old from a previous relationship; he worried she would leave him. The roiling emotions proved deadly for little Brendan Link Creato, a Camden County prosecutor told a judge Tuesday, seeking high bail for the boy's father, who had reported him missing and now is charged with his murder.

Weeks before Brendan's pajama-clad body was found in Haddon Township woods, David "D.J." Creato Jr. was distraught and arguing with his 17-year-old girlfriend to keep her from leaving him, Assistant Prosecutor Christine Shah said.

The girlfriend, a juvenile whom Shah did not name but who has been identified as Julia Spensky, had warned Creato she disliked children and resented his devotion to the boy. Shah said authorities learned of the fraught relationship mostly from the couple's numerous text messages and online postings.
"She issued an ultimatum to him," Shah said Tuesday after Creato, charged with the Oct. 13 murder of his son, was brought into a Camden courtroom for his first appearance.
Shah said medical examiners determined the boy died of "homicidal violence." Superior Court Judge Edward McBride set bail at $750,000 - lower than the $1 million sought by Shah, but higher than the $250,000 a defense attorney said might be appropriate.
Creato, 22, did not confess to police, but Shah said he told investigators that he was feeling "jealous and anxious" in the hours before he noticed his son had disappeared from his apartment, and that he had been worried that the woman he loved had found someone else.
Creato called 911 at 6:07 a.m. Oct. 13 and told the dispatcher that his child must have unlocked the door and wandered off, Shah said.
"I just woke up, and my 3-year-old's missing," Creato said, according to a recording of the call. "I just woke up and he wasn't in my apartment. I don't know if he wandered out or what happened. I don't know where he is. The door was locked. I guess he unlocked it and left."
Shah said his voice during the call had a "flat affect and tone."
Brendan had been "very afraid of the dark," Shah said, to the point that he had been reluctant to go to the bathroom at night, according to interviews with grandparents and other relatives who had babysat him.
The stretch - about three-quarters of a mile - between Creato's apartment and the muddy spot by the Cooper River where Brendan's body was found is extremely dark at night, very steep at one point, and difficult to negotiate, she said.
Besides, Shah said, Creato was sleeping less than nine feet from the door and would have awakened if Brendan had unlocked it or if an intruder had entered.
It is "a circumstantial case" in which the "circumstances are quite compelling," Shah said, laying out a chilling narrative.
Much of D.J. Creato's life was online, she said. Investigators examined 9,487 text messages he exchanged with his girlfriend after meeting her in June on Tinder, a dating website, and during an "intense romantic relationship" that continued into October. Shah said the teen had written a series of "unbelievable" blogs in which she described her "strong dislike of children."
Creato, shackled and wearing blue jail garb, said nothing during the hearing and mostly looked down.
His attorney, Richard Fuschino Jr., said the prosecutor's version of what happened was improbable, and that his client had cooperated fully and truthfully with investigators.
"He spent an entire day answering the questions of investigators," Fuschino said.
Shah, in saying Brendan died of "homicidal violence," said an examination of his brain showed an abnormality consistent with oxygen deprivation that can be caused by asphyxiation, drowning, or manual strangulation.
The prosecutor said there was unhealed bruising to the right clavicle, near the neck, which indicated that the toddler was injured prior to his death. There was no evidence that an accidental injury or disease caused the child's death, she said.
Shah did not say where the murder took place, but disputed Creato's suggestion that Brendan had gone missing.
"Never once had he left the apartment or his mother's house or his grandparents' by himself," she said.
Shah said that on the night Brendan was killed, Creato had called his girlfriend eight times, and that he noticed from her Snapchat online account that she had met up with a "guy he was jealous of." Then, at 1:37 a.m., he checked his phone again, though he told investigators he had gone to bed at 10 p.m., Shah said.
Shah said problems developed between Creato and his girlfriend after she began attending college in New York and could only visit him on weekends. The teen, who previously lived in Pennsylvania, told Creato that he would have to give up taking custody of Brendan every other weekend to be with her, Shah said.
McBride, the judge, said that if Creato posts bail, he will not be allowed to leave the state or make any contact with Brendan's mother, Samantha Denoto, or her family.
Denoto sat stoically in the front row of the packed, hushed courtroom and declined to comment afterward. She and Creato, who were not married, had shared custody of Brendan. She has made no public comment since the boy's death, when her family issued a statement saying it was "heartbroken" and wanted privacy.
The only sign of emotion Denoto showed was when Shah told the judge that Creato and Spensky still were communicating. Denoto shook her head vigorously, as if she did not believe that was possible.
Shah said the teen was away at college when the child was killed.
In an interview in November, Fuschino identified Creato's girlfriend as Spensky and said she had been at Creato's apartment the weekend before Brendan's death.
In a Tumblr post after Brendan's body was discovered by a K-9 unit, Spensky wrote that she was "possibly a suspect in a homicide investigation."
The post, subsequently removed, also said:
"I was advised by my attorney not to speak to anyone about my case. . . . My boyfriend is in worse trouble than I am and can't leave the state he's in."
Shah said that while they dated, Creato and his girlfriend had visited the spot where Brendan's body was found about 30 times. The pair had taken pictures there and posted them online.
Creato told investigators that it was a "favorite place . . . and he referred to it as spiritual to him," Shah said.
Brendan "was placed there," Shah said, noting that the socks he was wearing when his body was found had no dirt on them.
If convicted of murder, Creato would face a minimum of 30 years in prison without parole and a maximum term of life imprisonment with at least 67 years without parole, the judge said.
