Malaysia's first sharia-compliant airline makes its debut flight

Malaysia’s first Sharia-compliant airline (and only the fourth in the world), Rayani Air took to the skies over the weekend. Acting in accordance with Sharia law, female crewmembers who identify as Muslim must wear a traditional hijabwhile non-Muslim crew are required to be “decently dressed.”
All food and beverages served in flight will be halal-certified and a strict no-alcohol policy will be enforced as well. Additionally, prayers will be recited before the departure of each flight. “We are the first Malaysian airline to be Sharia-compliant, based on guidelines by relevant authorities,” recently named Rayani Air managing director Jaafar Zamhari said in a statement. “We are proud of this.”

Halal—foods that are permissible for Muslims to eat or drink under Sharia law—excludes pork and its by-products, alcohol, and animals not slaughtered according to Islamic practices.

While Rayani Airlines isn’t the first carrier to abide by Sharia law, Malaysia is officially billed as a secular state with a more moderate temperament. Other Sharia carriers operate in the more fundamentalist communities of Saudi Arabia and Iran. However reports of increasingly conservative attitudes have been on the rise over recent months in Malaysia, according to reports.

Based in the Island resort town of Langkawi in the Andaman Sea, Rayani Air was granted their Air Service License and Air Operator's Certificate from the Department of Civil Aviation on Friday and has since launched its inaugural flight from Kuala Lumpur.

For now, the carrier plans to operate domestic flights within Malaysia using Boeing 737s before expanding internationally to Asia Pacific routes including South-east Asia, China, Australia, and the Middle East.

Release of man convicted over Delhi gang-rape sparks protests

Te youngest convict in a fatal gang-rape in New Delhi has been released from a youth correctional facility, sparking street protests and condemnation from the victim’s parents.

The rape and murder of 23-year-old student Jyoti Singh on a bus in Delhi in 2012 caused global outrage and triggered reform of legislation relating to sexual offences. Her family allowed her to be named in an attempt to end the stigma facing sex attack victims in India.

The freed man, who was 17 at the time of the crime and cannot be named, was sentenced to three years in a reform facility in August 2013 and finished his term this weekend. Under Indian law, regardless of the crime, under-18s can be imprisoned for a maximum of three years.

On Friday Delhi’s high court rejected a petition to extend the sentence, saying that the man had served the maximum under the law. Several activists and politicians demanded that he not be released until it could be proven that he had reformed. The supreme court rejected an appeal against his release on Monday.

Days after the third anniversary of the attack, Indian police confirmed that the rapist, now 20, had completed his spell behind bars. He is now being supervised by a non-governmental agency, which will help him to receive training to become a tailor.
“The convict was handed over to an NGO. He is no longer under the jurisdiction of the police,” a police spokesman told AFP. A source added: “He has been given a new identity and his criminal record has been expunged.”

The prospect of the rapist walking free has revived public anger over the attack. On Sunday protests led by Singh’s parents took place near the India Gate monument in the centre of the capital.
“I am forced to protest on the road as this government appears blind to the atrocities being committed against women in India,” said Singh’s mother, Asha, who was dragged away along with other protesters by police.
“When will the government wake up? What kind of murder or crime against a woman will make the government see reason? This government wants women to suffer and die. Society will decide what to do with this government … I just want justice, I want a stay on his release.” she said, according to local media translation.
Singh’s father said:
“Not only in India but also abroad, people do not want his release, as he had not done the act of a juvenile. The prime minister has the power to stop his release, but no one is taking any action.”
“What can I say? There are no words to describe our disappointment,” he said, referring to the Supreme Court’s decision to reject the appeal against the rapist’s release.
“We don’t understand all these laws. We only know that the system has failed us.”
Four other men were sentenced to death in the case, and a fifth, the alleged ringleader, died in custody in 2013.
The four adults who went to trial confessed to the attack but later retracted their confessions, saying they had been tortured into admitting their involvement. Legal appeals against their death sentences are pending in the supreme court.

Legal experts say Indian law is clear on the rights of juveniles and the petition is unlikely to succeed.

Forbes’ top 10 most overpaid actors in Hollywood 2015

Johnny Depp has been named the most overpaid movie star in Hollywood by Forbes magazine after posting a string of box office turkeys.
Depp, one of the highest-paid actors on the planet with estimated annual earnings of $30m (£20m), returned just $1.20 for every $1 he was paid according to the financial magazine’s metric.
His poor position is due to the financial failure of movies such as Mortdecai, Transcendence and The Lone Ranger, all of which bombed at the box office on the back of derisive reviews. The Lone Ranger was the biggest turkey, with studio Disney estimated to have lost upwards of $150m on the western, but comedyMortdecai pulled in just $47.4m at the global box office against a production budget of $60m alone, and sci-fi thriller Transcendence only just recouped its $100m production costs, with marketing and other expenses likely to have put the film well into the red.
All 10 actors on the “most overpaid” list are male.

1. Johnny Depp: $1.20 per $1
2. Denzel Washington: $6.50 per $1
3. Will Ferrell: $6.80 per $1
4. Liam Neeson: $7.80 per $1
5. Will Smith: $8.60 per $1
6. Christian Bale: $9.20 per $1
7. Channing Tatum: $10.80 per $1
8. Brad Pitt: $12.00 per $1
9. Ben Affleck: $12.30 per $1
10. Tom Cruise: $13.60 per $1

Half of cardiac arrest sufferers ignore potentially life saving warnings

The heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating. Blood stops flowing to the brain and other vital organs, and without treatment, within minutes a person is typically dead.
But, a new study has suggested that sudden cardiac arrest isn't so sudden as half of sufferers experience warning signs hours, days, sometimes even weeks before cardiac arrest strikes, doctors at Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles discovered.

However, most people ignore those symptoms – and miss a chance to save their own lives, according to the study.
Study leader Dr Sumeet Chugh said: ‘By the time the 911 call is made, it’s much too late for at least 90 per cent of people.
‘There’s this window of opportunity that we didn’t really know existed.’

The study offers the possibility of one day preventing sudden cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest kills nearly 350,000 people in the US alone each year.
Though it’s commonly confused with a heart attack, cardiac arrest is different – and much worse.
It causes the heart’s electrical activity to be knocked out of rhythm, abruptly stopping it from beating.
CPR can buy time before an ambulance arrives, but few patients survive.
As a result it’s been hard for the medical community to tell whether cardiac arrest is a strike with little or no advance warning.

Scientists closely tracked sudden cardiac arrest in Portland, Oregon for more than a decade.
They examined records for nearly 1,100 people aged 35 to 65 who suffered a cardiac arrest between 2002 and 2012.
They also used interviews with family, friends and strangers who witnessed the patient’s collapse.

For around a quarter of patients, the scientists couldn’t find any information about whether they experienced symptoms – making it tough to say how common warning signs are.

However, of the remaining 839 patients, half had evidence of at least one symptom in the previous month.
Most of those people had symptoms within 24 hours of their collapse – though some came a week before and others up to a month.

Chest pain was the most common symptom in men. While women were more likely to experience shortness of breath.
Other symptoms included fainting and heart palpitations.
Furthermore, the study found that only a fraction of patients considered their symptoms bad enough to call 911 before they collapsed and those people were the most likely to survive.
University of Pittsburgh emergency medicine specialist Dr Clifton Callaway, who wasn’t involved in the study but chairs the American Heart Association’s emergency care committee, said: ‘Chest pain, shortness of breath – those are things you should come in the middle of the night to the emergency department and get checked out.‘We strongly recommend you don’t try to ride it out at home.’

A person’s chances of experiencing cardiac arrest is also increased if they’ve had previous heart attacks, coronary heart disease and certain inherited disorders that affect heartbeat.
People who know they are at a high risk may receive an implanted defibrillator to shock their heart back into rhythm.

But because cardiac arrest is such a public health problem, the Institute of Medicine kicked off a national campaign to teach CPR last summer, so that bystanders know how to help.

Dr Chugh and his team weren’t able to determine symptom severity.

The patients who called 911 about their symptoms were mostly already diagnosed with heart disease or had recurring symptoms.
Those patients’ survival rate was 32 per cent – compared to six per cent for other patients.

That’s because a fifth of the patients who called 911 had their cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital.
This study is just the start of more research to better predict the risk factors for cardiac arrest – and to figure out how to target them without panicking people – Dr Chugh said.

The study was published in Annals of Internal Medicine.

Boko Haram victim ostracized by community for having rapist's baby

Aisha Musa was kidnapped by Boko Haram militants who killed her family, and forced her at gunpoint to become a jihadi bride.
"They show you a gun, and then whatever they say you have to follow their command," Musa said.
She told CBS News her captor would lock her in during the day. At night, he would rape her.
"He would go on operations and kill people, and then come home and force me to be with him."
Musa was rescued by the Cameroon military, but the worst of her ordeal was finding out she was pregnant by her rapist.

"I am not enjoying that I have a baby from a Boko Haram man," she said. But she is resigned and there are moments of tenderness between her and her young child.
Musa never saw the Chibok girls but often heard the fighters speak of them. Like many of the other girls, they too were forced to marry the militants.

In a double injustice, many are now stigmatized by their community. Girls like Musa are regarded as spoiled goods, her baby a very public reminder of a cruel and unfair shame.

Aisha Musa has been living in the crowded Minawao refugee camp for seven months. She survives by selling corn meal at the local market.

Kentucky Gov. removes names of clerks from marriage licenses

Kentucky Republican Gov. Matt Bevin ordered the state to prepare new marriage licenses that do not include the names of county clerks, in an attempt to protect the religious beliefs of clerk Kim Davis and other local elected officials.

Bevin said he directed the Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives to issue the revised marriage license forms to all county clerks. The executive order comes after Davis, the Rowan County clerk, spent five days in jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Davis said she could not issue the licenses because they had her name on them.
Bevin said he issued the executive order to "ensure that the sincerely held religious beliefs of all Kentuckians are honored." It was one of five executive orders he issued Tuesday, the first of his administration, that mostly revised or suspended recent actions by former Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear.
"Today, I took action to uphold several commitments I made during my campaign so that we can implement real solutions that will help the people of Kentucky," Bevin said in a news release.
It's unclear how Bevin's order will affect a federal lawsuit brought by four couples against Davis. One of Davis' deputy clerks has been issuing altered marriage licenses to eligible couples since September. They do not include Davis' name or the name of the county.

This puzzle has been driving the Internet crazy, can you solve it?

Earlier this week, artist Gergely Dudás posted a very festive photo on his Facebook page that featured a plethora of snowmen. Then he put a panda in there to hide amongst the ranks of snowmen and it's up to us to find him before they figure out there's an imposter in the crowd!
Honestly, it took me about 6-8 seconds, it took one of my sisters 5 seconds to find it but don't go by our record. See if you can find the Panda and how long it took you to find it. :-)

F1 Jenson Button and wife Jessica Michibata split after only 1 year of marriage

Jenson Button and wife Jessica Michibata's separation was completely "amicable", a spokesperson for the racing driver said.
The ex-Formula One world champion and underwear model Jessica wed last December after five years of dating, but the pressures of their jobs, keeping them in different parts of the world, has taken its toll.

"Jenson and Jessica have decided to go their separate ways and it is very amicable. There is no-one else involved," the 35-year-old star's representative said on Tuesday.
Now attention turns to Jenson's estimated £35m fortune as it is reported there was no prenuptial agreement set in place.
"Jenson and Jessica did not have any financial arrangement before their marriage," a source close to the pair told The Sun. "There are ongoing discussions between them about money, but it's too early to say how it will pan out."

And he admitted that his hectic schedule meant he wasn’t able to give Jessica dates when they could meet up.
He added:
“I’m travelling so much with racing that I can’t say: ‘I’m going to have a weekend off Formula 1 and come to Japan to see you,’ It just doesn’t happen like that with sport.”
“She’ll come to half the races but when I’m at a race, I’m not the same person as when I am not at a race,” he admitted.
“I have to be selfish. I have to be focused. I am a very different person, and Jessie knows that, and she understands that, as do most of my friends and family. I can be a bit snappy over a race weekend".
“I just need my apartment to be simple, easy, so I can come in, do my thing, and leave again, pack and repack and leave. It’s been my life for 16 years now – you get used to travelling the circus.”

7 Qualities That Will Make A Man Want To Marry YoU

Call it green light, red light or whatever you like, there are certain qualities men find irresistible in women. It’s therefore no surprise that some ladies date a man for just one month and before you know it, the man proposes, while others keep going from one man to the other and they keep “dumping” you.
Most of our ladies already know these things but choose to still ignore in the name of being hard to get or being “civilized “. There are however some things that civilization cannot change especially in Africa, at least not in this our generation yet.
Without much ado, here are some qualities that will surely make a man want to have you forever.

1. Respect : Every man craves for respect, especially from women. It has nothing to do with pride, its the way we are wired. If you find it hard as a lady to respect a man then you might as well forget about settling with a man and maybe try a fellow woman. Women thrive on love and attention, men thrive on respect. Even the Bible says it. When you respect and honor a man, there’s nothing he cannot do for you. That is why women who seem respectful always attract men. Enough said on this.
2. Confidence : Now by confidence I don’t mean arrogance, there’s a lot of difference between them. A confident woman knows what she wants and goes for it, she knows how to make her man happy, she feels free to show off her man and brag about him, she pursues her goal with vigour and there’s this air of happiness around her. That’s the kind of woman a man cannot resist. Not the talkative, insulting, busy body type.
3. Decency: A large percentage of men desire decently dressed women. At least 90 percent and am talking about serious relationship unless a man wants to have you for satisfaction. No man wants to marry a wife who dresses half Unclad. Sexy is good but Unclad is unacceptable to most men. Ladies too much makeup pisses most men off. Too much artificial hair, nails and all makes you look fake and only good for banging.
4. Can she keep a home? : There is nothing as nice as a man coming home and finding his house well cleaned and arranged. It tells the man that this lady will surely make a good wife. Most women feel that men are feeling too big to do these things like cleaning, washing and cooking. It’s not so. Men are not wired to do these things just like women are not wired to do strenuous work like wiring, carrying heavy loads etc.
5. Can she cook? : Men love food. I can’t stress that enough. That is why a man can start developing feelings for the house maid who cooks good food for him and takes care of his house. Show a man that you can feed him good food and he will want to keep you forever.

6. Neatness and good dress sense : A neat, well dressed, nice smelling, well put together woman is very desirable. Enough said.
7. Smile : Now this is where most Naija ladies fail woefully. I don’t know if it’s against the law in this country for women smile. You see them carrying long faces like they woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Ladies please smile. It communicates confidence and friendliness and also shows you have a good heart. Men can’t resist a sexy smile from a woman.

See The Church Where Bible Is Not Used and The Oba Of Benin Is The General Overseer (Photo)

On Akpakpava Road in the heart of Benin City, the Edo State capital, is a church founded over 500 years ago. The architectural design of the building tells its story. It does not advertise itself; yet has a large following. The Oba of Benin is its spiritual head, reports Osagie Otabor.

The Holy Aruosa Cathedral is to the Bini people what the Church of England is to the English people; no wonder it is referred to as the Church of Benin.
Welcome to the Holy Aruosa (the eye of God) Cathedral.
Members of the Holy Arousa are different from flocks of other religious bodies: they are seldom seen sharing pamphlets to convert members or inviting people to the church. The church leaders do not hold crusades or revival services to convert ‘souls’, neither do they invite people to experience miracles.
Legend has it that the church was located at the place because it was the spot the Bini had direct contact with Osanobua (God) long before the coming of the European explorers and missionaries.
During the British invasion of Benin Kingdom, the church was destroyed and the black stone was carted away along with other artifacts from the ancient city at about 1897. The invaders came with their own God, mode of worship and forbade the people from worshipping Osanobua at Holy Arousa.
It was Oba Akenzua II (father of the present monarch) who rebuilt the current cathedral, not only in Benin City, but in Onitsha, Umuahia and other areas.
The Oba of Benin is the spiritual head (general overseer) of the Church. His deputy is the Benin Crown Prince. The presiding head of the church is known as ‘Ohen Osa’ (God’s servant). A special seat is reserved for the Oba at the church. The priests dress like the Roman Catholic priests and usually wear red caps.
Service at the church is conducted in Bini language. The Holy Bible is not used in the church; much of the preaching revolves around reminding the congregation that the Oba is God’s representative on earth and on the need to be good while on earth. Baptism of new converts is done with the white chalk (Orhue) in what is regarded as ‘Igborhe’.
Does miracle happen in the church? Ohen Osa Harrison Okao said people received miracles and God’s blessings directly from God without any intermediary.
He said: “Those who seek God come here. We don’t beg people to come. If you attend and discover that your contact with God is cordial, you will remain. If you beg God for promotion and you come here and got it, you will remain here.”
Harrison said the church was founded during the reign of Oba Esigie and to worship God without praying through any intermediary.
He said: “We use our local language to communicate with our God. We are aware of other diverse ways of reaching God. If you are a good Muslim, God will accept you. If you are a good Christian, God will accept you.
“We don’t use the Bible here. We have our own book. We use the book of Holy Arousa according to the sayings of the ancient belief written by the wise men. The church is still in existence till today, it is an entity that will last forever. Nothing can stop it.”
“A professional doctor does not need sign board. Oba is a special human being. He is God’s representative on earth. The seat that concerns Omon N’ Oba, nobody can sit on it. That seat is exclusively preserved for him.”

'My children know they are lucky to have the life they have' - David Beckham

David Beckham feels his children know how lucky they are to have the kind of life they have. The Former Manchester United, Real Madrid, Ac Milan and PSG player is a UNICEF ambassador and recently undertook a task of playing in all 7 continents of the world while returning to Old Trafford in October to stage a charity match for UNICEF.

The former England football captain said his children are aware of the good work he has done over the years for charities such as Unicef, and that he sits down with them following a trip and discusses every detail with them. He said:

"My kids have been asking to come on these trips with me for years so at some point they will, obviously the priority is their schooling, but they are interested in these trips. My children always understand how important and how lucky they are to have the life they have."
He said the focus of the BBC One documentary he was shooting titled 'For The Love Of The Game' was to showcase the good work done by Unicef and to highlight the "power of the game and what the game means to so many people around the world" and not just to show off his wife Victoria Beckham or his family.
"If we had wanted Victoria to be a part of this she was more than happy to be part of it," he said. "But I think this was something separate that we wanted to... use this documentary to highlight the game and what it's meant to me and what it's meant to so many people. Like I said, Victoria would have done something in it, but I don't think we needed her to. We don't sit down and discuss about keeping things separate but I think we both have our own things that we focus on. We both have things we do individually and together. I wouldn't walk into her studio and try and tell her how to make a dress ... it might be interesting if I did but we definitely have our own individual things."
