Mum 'died of heroin overdose' in baby's hospital room while Dad was passed out
The death of Mary Ann Landers has shocked the small town of Trinity, Alabama, where she and her husband where known as doting church-going parents.
Just hours before the 32-year-old died on Wednesday the couple had taken to Facebook to update the progress of their daughter who had undergone surgery.
The mother was later found slumped on the floor at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Centre and her husband Wesley Landers was discovered unconscious in nearby room.
He was found with a heroin syringe in his arm and revived with Narcan. Another two syringes were nearby on the bathroom counter, documents state.
A judge ruled for his bond to be set at $500,000 (£344,000) bond.
“It just goes to show you how strong the grip is of drugs,” said Hamilton County Coroner Dr Lakshmi Kode Sammarco.She added that in just the last two weeks, her office has investigated more than 20 overdose related deaths.
“There is just something inherently wrong with bringing a child to a very specialised medical centre, one of the best in the world, and then making a really bad mistake and losing your own life,” Dr. Sammarco added.The Landers daughter had been admitted to the hospital in Cincinnati for a trachea reconstruction surgery.
Officials said the surgery went well, and the baby is recovering.
Police continue to investigate the incident.
"I've got to say now nothing really surprises me,” said Chief Tom Synan of the Hamilton County Heroin Coalition. "It is shocking where it happened, how it happened. You're right there with your child.”

Of those sent to jail, five of the six had traveled to Syria or Iraq to fight for the terrorist group.
The sentencing of the jihadists comes a day after Paris was rocked by an attempted terror attack on the first anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo massacre.

French Defence officials received at Unity Palace
The President of the Republic His Excellency Paul BIYA granted audience on Wednesday 6 January 2015 to the French Chief of the Defence Staff, Army General Pierre de VILLIERS, for discussions on the fight against the Boko Haram terrorist group.
Speaking to the press shortly after the audience with the Head of State that lasted over one hour, the top French military officer said that Cameroon is a very important partner in the fight against terrorism and hence his presence in Cameroon for concertation with the Head of State and other personalities.
In the course of the audience, President Paul BIYA raised General de VILLIERS to the rank of Officer of the National Order of Valour, a decoration which is testimony of the high level of friendship and trust between Cameroon and France. There was also an exchange of gifts to further solidify the fraternal relationship.
General Pierre de VILLIERS was accompanied to the audience at Unity Palace by the French Ambassador to Cameroon, Christine ROBICHON; the Commander of the French soldiers in Gabon, Brigadier General Vincent GUIONIE; and the Diplomatic Adviser, Jean Marie MAGNIEN.

Fire on Mount Fako Mistaken for Eruption
Cameroon Journal, Buea – Simon Besem Besong, Conservator of the Mount Cameroon National Park is dispelling rumours that the Mountain is erupting. The misinformation that went wild on social media on the night of Monday, January 4 was provoked by a bush fire set by hunters.
Experts say that bush fire on the savannah part of Mount Cameroon has become a regular feature but are emphatic that no such fire can result to an eruption.

“As park management, we have an obligation to identify when to do early burning and when to avoid burning. If you don’t burn it and the biomass increases, and the fire comes in, the impact on biodiversity can be very high,” Besong said.
He says burning biomass on the savannah part of the mountain enables fresh grass to crop up, which grass serves as food for animals.
The conservator of the park says they have been sensitising villagers in and around the park area to desist from illegal bush burning.
“One of the ways to avoid bush burning is to sensitise the hunters. Last year a fire trace of 3.5 kilometres was done and then we did control burning,” the conservator said, adding that the 1994 forestry law in its article 156 punishes unauthorised setting of fire in the national park.
As at now, experts say there is no direct link between bush fire and volcanic eruptions. Hence, information on social media that the mountain is erupting is false.

Christine Lagarde received at Unity Palace
The Director General of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Madam Christine LAGARDE was received in audience at Unity Palace by the Head of State His Excellency Paul BIYA and was later offered a reception by the Presidential Couple.
Speaking to the press shortly after the audience, the Director General of the IMF said she had an excellent discussion with the President of the Republic. Discussions were centred around the long and important collaboration between the IMF and Cameroon, she continued, and that President Paul BIYA thanked the financial institution for their assistance, while hoping that the fruitful cooperation will continue.
The Delegation of the Director General included Madam Antoinette SAYEH, Director of Africa Department; Mr. Gerard Thomas RICE, Director of the Communication Department; Mr. Mario De ZAMAROCZY, chief of the mission to Cameroon; Mr. Gilles BAUCHE, Adviser at the Directorate General and Mr. Kadima KALONJI, the Resident Representative of the IMF in Cameroon.
An official reception was offered in honour of Madam LAGARDE by the Presidential Couple.

Cameroon Women National Team, the Indomitable Lionesses, have conquered Africa, voted Women National Team of the Year at the 24th edition of the CAF Glo Awards.

Cameroon: Boko Haram suspect commits suicide inside mosque
A suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber blew himself up inside a mosque in the Ganse neighbourhood of Kolofata town in the far north of Cameroon on Friday morning, sources informed the African Press Agency.
According to witnesses at the spot, the suspect who was intent on carrying out a carnage during dawn prayers, was foiled by the vigilance of the Muslim worshippers present there at the time.
Barely two other people were wounded in the blast.
The attack coincides with an increase in similar incidents in areas bordering Nigeria, most of which are regularly foiled by vigilante groups consisting of civilians.
In nearby Kolofata, and according to the editor of regional biweekly Oeil du Sahel, a farmer was murdered the day before in an incursion by Boko Haram at Achigachia.
Two women were also kidnapped on the same occasion.
On the same day, six Cameroonian hostages held for several weeks by the sect, surrendered themselves before authorities at Fotokol after escaping from their captors.

Three seconds. That's how long we had from the moment we drifted off the road until the truck hit the pilar at 85mph. In three seconds Hunter had to handle a situation that would either kill us immediately or save our lives. He keeps beating himself up for my pain but he saved my life. He keeps saying 'I should have protected you and I didn't do that' but he did exactly what he needed to do to make sure my life didn't end. The whole baseball player part helped him out...if he can hit a 95mph fastball he can do anything ��. He took care of me. And when we were both lying in our beds in the ER he found a way to come protect my heart and give me a hug. Lord knows I needed that just as much as my safety.
I'm overwhelmed at how little damage was done to Hunter and I in a wreck that should have chopped our bodies in half. I'm in awe of the presence of God in this entire situation. Every part of this experience we went through points directly to Him. The way God helped Hunter to respond exactly the way he did behind the wheel, spinning the truck exactly where it should have to be able to smash into the pilar directly in the middle of me and Hunter so we were both untouched...that doesn't just happen. God doesn't throw protection around like that for no reason. He does it because he's not finished with us.
I have problems with my heartbeat. When I get anxious or worried it flutters pretty bad...pulling me into panic attacks. The moment we hit and I realized I was conscious I realized that is what was happening to me. While out of breath and trying to move my legs i was screaming..panicked...yelling for Hunter to just say something. I needed to know he was okay. Looking to the drivers seat all I saw was his head through the windshield, a face full of blood, and a body that wasn't moving. I looked straight out the truck and there was a man..bright with a big white beard. No other cars in sight...just this man. He was my guardian angel. He saw me and immediately told me that an ambulance was coming. I jumped out of the car, ran over to Hunters side and just looked at this man. From that moment until Hunter was cut & lifted out of the truck I believe with my whole heart that looking at this man helped me to literally believe in that moment that Hunter was next to me on the road. I dont know if it was a hallucination or me unconsciously dreaming or a glimpse of heaven...but all I knew in that moment was that Hunter was safe with me. This man..looking at him for a short moment..helped me not witness Hunter being peeled out of the truck. I believe if I saw that I would have had a heart attack. Right when Hunter was actually out and next to me, I asked this man when the ambulance was coming. He told me in just a second. He walked away, I blinked and a flashlight was in my face. The paramedics were there helping me and Hunter and the anxiety and worry if he was okay disappeared because we were in good hands.
Here is the miracle part: no broken bones, concussions that lasted not even 24 hours, no internal damage, and just a few stitches in my knee and hunters face. Only that after an accident that paramedics wonder how we didn't die instantly and a truck that looks like it's been through a tree grinder. We're both already released from the hospital not even 48 hours after entering. All of our belongings in perfect condition besides a few things here and there..and the only thing left behind at the crash scene is Hunters bible open, with a page marked with scripture telling us to not be afraid; Jesus is with us.
I am amazed. Absolutely taken away by the presence of God. So blessed for him sending me an angel. So thankful for Hunter and his second chance at life...for his healing and health. We are so fortunate for families who traveled hundreds and hundreds of miles to be with us. And so thankful for all the thoughts and prayers that were sent our way. The power of prayer is real, and it healed me and Hunter. We are in a lot of pain because of the injuries, so any more prayers are appreciated while we recover.
But tonight I'm praying for all of you. If there's anything you read out of this novel I'm typing up here it's this: I want everyone to to know the love and the power of God. He has a purpose...and it's so clear that NOTHING...not even a car accident like this one will cause his plans for you to change. We are put on this beautiful earth for a reason and the reason is to help people know Him. We are made to show and share His love. And if it takes a car wreck like this for me to get to do that then I would do it all over again. I'm praying that everyone who reads this can get a glimpse of Gods faithfulness. He is GOOD. And working. And the plans he has for YOU and your life aren't going anywhere. Good or bad, what you want or what you don't want...it's God's doing. It's his plans unfolding. It's his kingdom coming. Embrace the struggles and the joys of this life! Without a doubt it's a miracle we're alive, but more than that it's simply Gods plan for us. We're so grateful for this wreck and all it will do in our lives. We are blessed to be okay. And so in love with the amazing God we
serve.
