Today's Observer features success stories of three young Gambians on the international scene. From sports to beauty to academia, Gambians continue to excel both at home and abroad. We commend Fatou Jobe, winner of the beauty pageant in Netherlands, Dr. Momodou Sallah for his outstanding performance as lecturer in the UK and the legendary Bakary Papa Gassama for continuing to make us proud in the world of soccer.
Dr. Sallah was a student leader in The Gambia with experience in youth work. His studies abroad landed him the opportunity to teach in the UK's college system. His success in the UK never blinded him to the fact that he is, and will forever remain, Gambian. He continued to come back home regularly bringing along his students from De Montfort University in Leicester exposing them to Gambian culture and at the same time making an impact here in youth development.
Indeed his anointment as the U.K's most innovative lecturer has everything to do with his activities in The Gambia. He is one of those courageous Gambians who continue to speak well and act well towards his motherland and because of this we envisage even greater success for him in the future.
Papa Gassama is one solid Gambian youth whose hard work and dedication to duty and country is solidified with the rare personal achievement gem of self-confidence, a resource well needed by our young talents. Papa has already made a name for himself as the first Gambian pair of feet to tread the pitch of the football World Cup as man in charge of many crucial games.
His second grand triumph as Africa's best referee has everything to do with his patriotic zeal to represent his country with honesty, dignity and pride. Inshaa Allah, his success will be greater and more enduring as the entire country will continue to pray for him and support him.
Our beauty queen from Netherlands knows the truth of the fact that no matter how long a log stays in the river it will never become a crocodile. We commend her for her beauty of intention and national pride to come back home and share her glory with kin and kith.
There is nothing more beautiful than persistence armed with faith and adorned with patriotic zeal. In the words of the poet John Keats, "beauty is truth, truth beauty, that is all ye know on earth and all ye need to know."
May our youths continue to excel in everything good and beautiful, remaining, "to The Gambia ever True."
