Cameroon Journal, Yaounde – Only 56% of Cameroonians are ready to stamp out corruption in the country at individual levels, the 2015 Corruption Barometer Report published by Transparency International, TI-Cameroon has shown.
Presenting the report in Yaounde, Wednesday December 9, Njoh Manga, Vice President of TI-Cameroon, noted that corrupt practices were rampant in the country within the last 12 months, with many Cameroonians agreeing that corruption is the third worry after unemployment and healthcare.
The barometer was based on a survey dubbed, “People and Corruption: Africa Survey 2015,” conducted in 28 African countries, amongst them Cameroon. In the research, the opinion in relation to experience and perception of corruption of some 1182 Cameroonians was gathered between January and February 2015.
57% of the respondents said government is not taking the fight against corruption seriously and that the system for denunciation is inefficient and risky. The report noted that one out of three persons who expose acts of corruption equally expose themselves to damaging consequences.
The police and taxation services were indexed as the most corrupt in the country. Over 48% of people who use these services confessed that they doled out bribe to get the service. The TI-Cameroon report indicates that judicial officials were more prone to taking bribes.
Of the 28 countries under study, Cameroon emerged as the only country where there was massive corruption in all the six services that were under review.
To curb the rising tide, TI-Cameroon officials have proposed that the fight against corruption be rigorous and inclusive.
They also mentioned the urgent need for the application of Article 66 of the Constitution which focuses on the declaration of assets.
To make the anti-corruption fight to be efficient, TI-Cameroon has recommended that the government guarantees the independence of the judiciary, protect whistle blowers, ensure the independence of anti-corruption organs, adopt an anti-corruption law, ratify an African Union convention on the prevention and fight against corruption and so on.
