Crowds flock to Catholic church after image of virgin Mary appears on window (photos)

Crowds of worshippers are surging to the Transfiguration Catholic Church in Marietta, Georgia, and it's not as a result of the priest's sermon. It's thanks to what the pastor describes as a 'divine occurrence' after an image of the virgin Mary appeared on the church's window. Visitors have left flowers beneath the window and built a makeshift altar.

Responding to allegations that the 'divine occurrence' may have more mortal origins, the church's pastor Father Bernardo Molina says he did not create the image himself.

'There are a lot of people that may think it's a stain or condensation. They ask if I drew it,' he said.
'No, no, no. There's no way you can do that,' he added.

Father Molina said the unusual mark appeared on the window on December 12 and can be seen on most sunny days.

One woman who was among the throngs queuing up to see the 'miracle' was in tears as she prayed to the silhouette.
'Believe, believe and have faith,' was her message.

In a Facebook post to the church's followers, Father Molina said he was not sure how the image appeared.

He said: 'Many parishioners and other visitors claim it to be an image of the Virgin Mary.
I have heard several explanations ranging from a divine occurrence to a faulty window coating. I will let you make your own interpretation.
'We may never agree on why or how this image appeared on the window.'

Campus Classicals 2016! : The First Ever Classical Music Contest in Africa

The Nigerian music entertainment scene has indeed grown and become the envy of other African countries; the deftness of indigenous production and the combination of tunes is often mind blowing not to talk of the lyrical creativity of the various ‘commercial’ artists.

Various artists continue to spring up using the mix of sultry and smooth vocals often times delivered with ‘unconventional’ and in some cases morally ‘controversial’ song lyrics with peculiar Afro-pop tune that makes listeners swing and groove.

In many instance, we have started nodding our heads to a song before even understanding its lyrical depth. Yet, the question beckons; how many of these musicals can last beyond a time and a season?

For this very reason, Classical Showcase Ltd., an indigenous Nigerian entertainment company initiated the ‘Campus Classicals’ designed to stimulate interest in the study and practice of music both in and outside the academia so as to achieve its (music) full benefit to the society. This is the first contest/festival of its kind wherein students from across Nigerian Universities come together in one single event to showcase musical talents in theory and practice. The contest event which will hold in May, 2016 is estimated to attract over 70 million media viewers and 20 million participants. Already, a lot of Universities are enlisted to participate in the epic classical music contest these includes University of Lagos, University of Nigeria Nsuka, University of Port Harcourt, University of Benin, University of Jos, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria among others.
‘Campus Classicals’ has the endorsement of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Music Society of Nigeria (MUSON) and the Association of Nigerian Musicologists (ANM) among others. Classical Showcase Ltd., the organizers of the classical contest specializes in the planning and execution of classical music activities ranging from talent hunt, competition, consultancy, shows, marketing and promotion. In the words of Classical Showcase Ltd, our vision is to make classical music a veritable alternative to entertainment content in Africa.

It is in this recognition that Classical Showcase Ltd. is putting up this festival to further challenge university authorities and music/performing Arts departments to enhance the academic development of their students through intensive Music training. The festival is aimed at exposing students to practical classical music beyond their immediate learning environment and interface with their counterparts from other institutions. It is also to showcase the creative abilities of students and build a sense of success in them. To harness the talents of students, bring participants to national and international limelight thereby creating attraction for tourists.

Fire razes 200 shops in Ibadan on Christmas day

Christmas was bad for traders in the popular Sango Market, Ibadan as fire razed over 200 shops in the plank section of the market. The fire reportedly started around 3pm, burned for several hours and as at 8pm, it still hadn't been put out. According to information gathered, planks estimated at ‎over N250m was lost in the disaster.

The Oyo State Fire Service finally responded to the inferno and was seen racing towards Eleyele Water Works for a refill when it ran out of water.

A trader in the market said the fire started after he left his shop.
He said:
“Shortly after I attended to a customer who called me on phone, I had the call that the shops had caught fire”.
Another trader Mr. Afolabi said several sawing machines and other logging equipment were lost in the fire.
He added:
‎“Each time the vehicle left to refill water, we lost more shops because the fire would gain more ground. Don’t forget this is the time of the year when fire incidents are rampant because we are in the dry season.
More fire service vehicles are needed to forestall possible overnight fire here. As you can see, we now pay to bring water tanker to help the fire service men.”

French journalist in China 'must apologise or leave'

China has refused to renew the press credentials of a French journalist, effectively expelling her, unless she recants one of her stories, the reporter told AFP Friday, the first such case since 2012.

Ursula Gauthier, a Beijing-based correspondent for French news magazine L'Obs, must issue a public apology for an article she wrote last month or China's foreign ministry will not renew her press credentials, set to expire on December 31, officials told Gauthier on Christmas Day.

"They confirmed that if I did not make a public apology on all the points that had 'hurt the Chinese people' ... my press card would not be renewed and I would have to leave on December 31," she told AFP.
Gauthier would be the first foreign correspondent in China to be expelled since the 2012 expulsion of Melissa Chan, correspondent for the English-language service of Al Jazeera.

While the domestic media is subject to strict control and many topics are taboo, the foreign media is free to publish on any topic. However, foreign journalists frequently complain of harassment by the authorities while conducting routine reporting.

Her article in L'Obs triggered condemnation from Beijing and a virulent campaign in the state-run Global Times and China Daily, as well as thousands of often violent and abusive comments from Chinese Internet users. Her photo was published online.

Entitled "After the attacks (on Paris), Chinese solidarity is not without ulterior motives", her essay spoke of China's anti-terrorism policies in the country's western region of Xinjiang, homeland of the Muslim Uighur ethnic minority -- many of whom complain of discrimination and controls on their culture and religion.

Chinese authorities said they believed Gauthier's article offered justification for violence in the region that the government labels as "terrorism".
"The article criticised China's counter-terrorism efforts, and denigrated and slandered Chinese policies. It provoked the strong indignation of the Chinese public," Hua Chunying, a foreign ministry spokesperson, said at a regular press briefing in early December.
Beijing considers condemnation of attacks in Xinjiang by foreign governments and the international press as weak, and has slammed Western countries for applying "double standards" on terrorism in the wake of the attacks in Paris.
